Description

Turin was and still is a buzzing metropolis. From its early days as the Kingdom of Savoy to the capital of Italy it has played a central role in the evolution of Italy. It was a pioneer in the automotive industry and after World War II it led the way to Italy’s recovery and growth as an industrial nation.

The city’s buildings are testimony to its auspicious past; where Emperors and Kings ruled and where the ideal of a United Italy was formed. One building however stands out, The Royal Palace. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site this is surely a “must see” on any visit to Turin.

You meet your guide at the entrance to the Royal Palace and with this intimate small group tour take a stroll around the splendid palace in the company of a passionate and very knowledge guide who will regale you with stories of the palace and the Royal Family.

The Royal Apartments are decorated with wonderful frescoes and adorned with huge chandeliers, fine carpets, colourful tapestries and beautiful inlaid furniture. You can’t miss the strange “Scala delle Forbici”, a wonder of architectural genius made by Filippo Juvarra.

You visit the Galleria Beaumont that is reminiscent of the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles. In 1832 the paintings were removed from the gallery to the Regia Pinacoteca and King Carlo Alberto was able to follow his great passion and bring together his collection of weapons and armoury in this magnificent Royal Armoury. There are some superb examples from the 16th century as well as oriental armoury.

As you proceed through the palace it becomes evident that many of the treasures housed here owe their existence to Carlo Alberto, perhaps chief amongst these being those in the Royal Library. With over two hundred thousand books, ancient manuscripts, engraving and drawings it is certainly worth spending a little time admiring this unique collection. Also here you will find Leonardo da Vinci’s famous “Self Portrait”.

At the end of the tour you gain direct access to The Cappella della Sacra Sidone (Chapel of the Holy Shroud). This priceless relic was kept here until the early 90s but is not closely guarded in the Duomo. The Chapel opened its doors to visitors in 2008 after a lengthy and complex restoration following a fire in 1997.

Book now to ensure a place on this small group tour! See all the treasures housed in this wonderful building in a 2 hour journey of discovery of Italy’s first king
