Description

In 1685, the location of the city began on its current place, after having declared the previous site uninhabitable, 70km heading south (Campos de Ibatin) due to the constant indigenous attacks and the flooding of the lands.

In San Miguel de Tucumán the Battle of Tucuman was fought in 1812, stopping the spanish advance over the “Provincias Unidas del Rio de la Plata”. Battle for which Grl. Manuel Belgrano entrusted to the Virgin of La Merced, today Patron of Argentine Army. After the victory, the Grl. entrusted to the Virgin his Baton of Command, today exhibited in the Basilica of La Merced.

Four years later, two blocks away from this Basilica, Argentinian Independence was declared, on July 9, 1816. Today this place is a open and free entry museum.

We will visit the Historical Zone around Independence Square, where we find the Metropolitan Cathedral, Economic Authority, San Francisco Church, Basilica of La Merced and Government Pallace. Then we will reach the National College, the Local Parlament, and Alberdi Square.
