Description

Surround yourself with Alaska's native wildlife and natural beauty on a tour that takes you into the heart of the rainforest. Take a nature walk through the woods to a life-filled wetland, see fierce raptors at an aviary center, and see explore the totem park.

Meet up with your guide in the center of downtown Ketchikan for a scenic drive up the coast to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary, a 40-acre (16-ha) private natural reserve on the edge of a marine estuary. A naturalist guide leads you deep into the forest along easy trails and boardwalks, passing through stands of hemlock, spruce, and cedar. At Eagle Creek, look out over the wetlands to where salmon spawn, luring bears and seals looking for food and other creatures like birds, Sitka black tail deer, mink, and marten in search of scraps.

From there, travel back in time to Alaska's early frontier days with a visit to the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company Sawmill, where you can see the mill's old saws and machinery. Afterward, check out the aviary exhibits of the Alaska Raptor Center, where interpretive guides can introduce you to the majestic birds and let you photograph the raptors up-close. Before heading back to Ketchikan, view the on-site totem park and shop for souvenirs in the General Store.
