The Shaw House

Our calendar is updated in real-time & our nightly rates are accurately displayed. Simply enter your desired dates and click 'Book Now!'

Renovated and remodeled, this historic 1878 Galveston home offers room for everyone to enjoy a group getaway. Built by Michael Shaw, known for naming the downtown historic district The Strand, you'll love a prime location that puts you close to the ocean and local attractions.

About a mile from the sun-soaked shores of Porretto Beach and about seven miles from the family-friendly destination of the Moody Gardens, this home will make it easy to dive into Texas-sized fun! Spend a day kayaking through Offatts Bay, or maybe rent a jet ski to skip across the waves. Check out the newest exhibits at the Moody Gardens before flying down the waterslide at the Schlitterbahn Waterpark!

Step into this bright and cheery home after a long day of exploring and grab an ice-cold drink in the fully equipped kitchen. The central air-conditioning will beat back the heat on warm days while the private washer/dryer takes care of the laundry. Sit out on the covered patio while the kids play in the fenced yard.

You can easily connect to the free WiFi to check the forecast before you plan your next adventure. Check out the sports scores on cable or make some popcorn and watch your favorite movie on the Blu-ray player. End the day with a nightcap out on the porch and spend a quiet moment with your special someone.

With the beach as your playground and the variety of local attractions at your fingertips, the only hard thing will be deciding where you start the fun when you book your trip to this historic Galveston home.

Beautiful, large and very Spacious!
Attended Mardi Gras 2024 with a group of friends. We had 8 in our party and this house with 5 large bedrooms was perfect for our stay. Beautiful neighborhood within walking distance to the Strand or a 5 min Uber ride. Beds were very comfy. The house overall was great and we will definitely consider booking again next year. Anybody looking for a place to comfortably house 10 people for a beach vacation or event should book this place.

Poor property management
The smoke alarm battery was dying in one of the bedrooms when we checked in and was beeping. Called Vacasa property management between 2 and 3 pm and they said someone would be out to change battery. They did not come out to change battery and when we returned to the home late that evening it was still beeping and rendered one of the needed bedrooms unusable. Called them again the next day and they finally showed up only to try to hand some batteries to us. This is an old historic home with high ceilings. Bad management and a waste of my time having to call them several times.

Nice overall house but…
The house itself was fine other than arriving and the toilet seat being broken and a broke hinge off one of the kitchen cabinets… the BIG negative was the quality of all the mattresses in the house. Think of your grandmas mattress that’s 50 years old.. no one in the house got a good nights sleep. In addition to the mattress the sheets were of the cheapest quality money can buy and felt like sandpaper… in summary the location was great, the house was fine but the mattresses and sheets were of the worst quality imaginable and we will not book this house again or any property being managed by the same people.

Enjoyed our stay. Would book again.
This beautiful historic spacious home was a great choice for my family of grandparents, adult children and grandchildren. The location was very handy, the amenities were plentiful, Wi-Fi worked great, and all the outdoor wood swings were fun to wile away the time. The listing states the house will sleep 10 people, which it does but there are not 10 drinking glasses or silverware for 10. The pots and pans need to be replaced. Two small dish towels is not sufficient. Written information posted in the house would be very helpful; we hunted for three days to find the trash receptacle outside. If the owners want to keep pests out of the house then it’s necessary to keep the trash out too. Thank you for a great place for my family to spend time together.

Peaceful retreat
A group of six women for a weekend writers’ retreat stayed here and found the home beautiful and spacious. There was plenty of room to visit and also to spend time alone both indoors and out. It is hard to find a genuine Victorian home on the island where the plumbing and electricity work seamlessly but we had no issues. Our only concern was a nail that stuck out of the wood in the bottom floor bedroom that unfortunately dug into an attendee’s foot and not enough towels for six women. I still give this home 5 stars.

Birthday weekend
The property is great! Clean and comfortable. There was no hand soaps in the bathrooms but that’s it. The neighbors light is on all night so curtains in upstairs bedrooms would really help as shades don’t help much to keep out the light. This house is awesome! Though!

Beyond disappointed
The house was absolutely filthy and the property manager confirmed it hadn’t been cleaned. Housekeeper was sent after we arrived and did a very quick sloppy clean job on first floor only. There were a ton of full trash bags thrown in the backyard and hundreds of flies. The light in downstairs bedroom didn’t work. The oven and stove were not functional. Filthy dishes put in cabinets. Previous guests belongings scattered around. Trash everywhere. Cockroaches inside and outside of house. I could go on and on. Extremely disappointed this was what our money got us for our family vacation.

Non-Dickens werkend
After the Dickens weekend was cancelled due to Covid-19, I was very disappointed that we were not allowed to reschedule our stay to adhere to current safety suggestions. All we were offered was a 50% refund , less fees. I believe that that was the management company's decision. The house itself was lovely, spacious and in a great location.

Galveston for Mardi Gras
The property is in a great location, and very spacious. We felt there were little things overlooked; trip hazard in front upstairs bedroom with the rug, the water in the back bedroom bathtub never got warm and the water pressure was terrible, the gas knobs on the range are easy to turn on without realizing it, lack of mirrors in bedrooms and overall the house needed some TLC

Gorgeous home and great location!
Beautiful home, and very quick feedback when needed. It would have been nice to have known to bring dish and laundry soap, there were only one or two available. The House was within walking distance to some great local restaurants and also a park, which our kids loved. Overall we loved the home, and the location. We would highly recommend and definitely stay again.
