Travel Guide
Central Canal
Experience the pleasant scenery and wholesomeness of this welcoming state of unexpected architectural delights and remarkable natural wonders.

One of Indiana’s state mottos is “honest-to-goodness,” speaking of the importance that the state places on hospitality and authenticity. Appreciate a slower pace of life in a state known for its rural charms, Amish communities and architecturally impressive cities. Everywhere you turn in the state you will be greeted with friendly faces and large portions of freshly sourced food.

The name of the state is said to mean “land of the Indians,” hinting at the region’s history as a homeland for several Native American nations. Although European settlers brought Indiana into statehood in 1816, its earliest inhabitants have left indelible marks on the landscape. Visit sites such as Angel Mounds State Historic Site, in the state’s southwestern corner, to learn about these ancient communities.

Indiana centers around its thriving state capital, Indianapolis. Amble around creative neighborhoods such as Fountain Square and pick up a craft beer at one of the numerous microbreweries in the city. Spend hours in the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art to learn about the mixture of cultures in the state and visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for high-speed thrills with thousands of motoring fans.

Marvel at the architectural achievements in the city of Columbus, where you will find over 75 notable buildings designed by some of the world’s leading architects. The geometric, modernist City Hall was designed by Edward Bassett, while elsewhere you will encounter works of Eero Saarinen and I.M. Pei among others.

Explore the rural north, where you can visit Amish communities and relax by lakes. Head to destinations such as Elkhart and Shipshewana to explore scenic villages without technology. Hike through tranquil scenery in state parks such as Chain O’ Lakes and Tippecanoe River.

Head to the south of the state and go underground in vast cave complexes. The Marengo Cave National Landmark is one of the subterranean highlights of the state. Choose either a crawling or walking route into the caverns.

Fly into Indianapolis International Airport to land in the heart of the state. Enjoy the great outdoors of Indiana at any time of year, whether that’s skiing in winter or hiking in summer.
