Travel Guide
Newburyport showing heritage elements

While visiting the coastal town of Newburyport, paddle kayaks on the lazy Merrimack River and explore Plum Island. These outdoor attractions add to the town’s appealing activities, which include shopping, spa relaxation, fine dining and studying New England history.

The Merrimack winds through Newburyport past marinas and ending in a large basin. Rent a paddleboard, kayak, ski boat or fishing boat to enjoy the water. Stroll along the boardwalk of the Newburyport Waterfront Promenade Park to see hundreds of boats.

Stop at the Custom House Maritime Museum to learn about the town’s history. The Old South Presbyterian Churchnearby was built in 1756.

Look for the white Plum Island Lighthouse marking access to the Atlantic Ocean. This spit of land is perfect for viewing and photographing sunrises. Stay on the barrier island to meander along Plum Island Beach and Newbury Beach. Watch for migratory birds at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. The fully accessible Hellcat Interpretive Trail boardwalk loop travels through wetland, scrub and dunes.

Head inland to walk, bike and admire the 19th-century gardens in Maudslay State Park along the Merrimack. In autumn, Sculpture at Maudslay features a free open-air display of works from 50 local artists.

Enjoy other arts and performing arts in and around town. Newburyport Art Association offers about 40 shows featuring regional artists, as well as classes. The Actors Studio presents professional performances in a black box studio. If you’ll be in Newburyport for a while, consider auditioning or joining an improv class. Firehouse Center for the Arts presents music, comedy, magic shows, holiday celebrations and a wide variety of other family-friendly events. Each year, Maudslay State Park hosts free Theater in the Open shows.

Newburyport is just a 1-hour drive or train ride from Boston and its international airport, making the town a great choice for a quick trip. Come in summer for the nine-day Yankee Homecoming Festival throughout town, with live music, games, crafts, fireworks and food, including tasty lobster.
