Obidos

Travel Guide
Obidos which includes a sunset
A striking castle is among the many historic landmarks packed into this little hilltop town, a scenic wonder filled with medieval architecture.

Óbidos has lots to offer visitors who are looking for a change of pace from Lisbon. Take some time out to wander the beautiful, old-fashioned streets of this compact little town and enjoy the peace and quiet it offers. See a wide range of wonderful sights including an impressive castle, a tranquil lagoon and a well-preserved 12th-century church.

Enter Óbidos via the stunning Porta da Villa, a grand gateway to the city that features beautiful blue and white tiles that are hundreds of years old. Follow the historic Óbidos Town Wall to get a sense of the size of the town. As you walk, pause often to take photos of the wonderful views across the red rooftops and winding cobbled lanes of the town.

Find Óbidos Castle in the north. This looming building looks like it came straight from an ancient legend. Look for the earliest parts of the castle, which date back to the 12th century. Those planning a lavish holiday can even stay overnight in this remarkable building, which now houses a luxury hotel.

Another wonderful example of historic architecture is the lovely Igreja de Santa Maria. Take the time to visit this beautiful white church, where King Afonso V of Portugal was married in the mid-15th century. Next, see the impressive 16th-century Óbidos Aqueduct, located around 10 minutes’ walk away.

Pick up souvenirs and local handicrafts along the Rua Direita, the town’s busiest street. This is also a great place to take a break for dinner or drinks, as there are plenty of restaurants and cafés here. Make sure you try some delicious ginja, the region’s special cherry liquor, which is sometimes served in a chocolate cup. Eat the tasty cup once you have finished drinking from it.

Reach Óbidos from Lisbon by car in a little over an hour. Spend at least a day or two here and make time to swim or sunbathe at the beautiful Lagoa de Óbidos, the peaceful lagoon to the north.

The walk around castle gave opportunity to make many photos with great vistas and narrow medieval streets with white houses and small green gardens. During the day locals sell a lot of souvenirs and local cherry vine in chocolate caps.
