Shockingly Horrible

Posted Jun 23, 2014
Pros: staff
Cons: close one room down at a time and upgrade. everything could be improved.
Location: Mendocino is a beautiful, artsy town. plenty to do and see.
This place was in shocking disrepair. It was worn out and tired. First let me start with the good. All staff that we encountered were very nice. The room was clean. Pretty far off views. Quiet. room was large. other than that this 'Inn' is not a quaint inn, it is a sleazy motel with beds that are very old and squeaky, lumpy and uncomfortable. the linens were ok, but the couches and chairs have seen better days, the bathroom, tiny, with peeling wallpaper and cheap toiletries. You could see major cracks in the doorways, the sliding glass door lock doesn't work, but there is a bold that you can take out of the bottom to open it. Breakfast consists of: coffee, tea, o.j., waffles, bagels, some whole fruit, oatmeal, hard boiled rubbery eggs. We suffered 2 nights on the bed, and as I walked around the grounds, many doors were opened and you could see how each room had beds with large divots in them. very worn. they need to update. I understand having beautiful antiques in the rooms, but the mattresses should not be one of those, neither should the table chairs, which I thought would break under the weight of a 5 year old. the building itself looked more or less freshly painted, but they forgot the trim and there was so many maintenance issues we could see from just walking to our car. choose elsewhere.

Quiet bargain

Posted May 19, 2014
Pros: Lots of nice places in town . This has what they do and is less expensive.
Best bargain in Mendocino . Nice , comfortable room , friendly, helpful staff . Breakfast area has a nice view . ( Are ocean view rooms .) Close to downtown . Next to a cemetery with lots of early settlers .

Better Days….

Posted Apr 16, 2014
Pros: The staff
Cons: There's a lot of deferred maintenance throughout the hotel.
Location: Excellent location!
The first night we were in a room that was stuffy and the only window was a sliding glass door. Because this was on the ground floor we didn't feel safe leaving it open for people or critters (there are woods around the hotel). Also, we smelled cigarette smoke all night but that's not the fault of the hotel. But we told them about it and they moved us to a room on the second floor and this was much nicer. The rest of our stay was very nice but the hotel gives the impression that they've had better days. There's a strong Victorian theme but not that well done. It was also disappointing that the breakfast was a meager continental breakfast and we had to go to another hotel to have hot breakfast that we had to pay for. The staff was nice and helpful but working in a tough situation.

I loved the location.

Posted Apr 2, 2014
Pros: Location- Quiet
Cons: Rooms need updating.
Location: Close to downtown. Able to walk everywhere.
I did enjoy my stay at Hill House, but I was disappointed with no lunches or dinners offered. The rooms do need updating. The grounds were in poor condition. It was obvious Hill House is going through some difficult times.

Two Days in Mendocino

Posted Mar 30, 2014
Pros: The location, just above Mendocino town, with wide distant views is very attractive. The room was large and comfortable if a bit dark, king bed.
Cons: The breakfast was limited to do-it-yourself service items, including waffles. More like a road side motel than a proper b&b.
Location: Mendocino town, the cliffs and sea, crafts - ample to keep us occupied for two days, even with cloud and rain one eveningl
We enjoyed staying at Hill House. It was our first stay there. We usually stay at cozy Sea Gull Inn in town, but as they do not accept pets, and we now have a dog, we switched to Hill House as it was dog friendly. Our dog Flora was very happy there!

Week end at Hill House

Posted Feb 1, 2014
Pros: Antiques
Cons: Coffee earlier in the lobby. Don't open lobby until 7am. A little late. No coffee till 730am We were long gone.
Location: Mendocinco speaks for itself.
Loved it. Room was big and clean. Staff was very friendly. The only thing we didn't like is that is was to far from the Ocean. The view wasn't all that.

Had a very good experience. Staff very friendly and nice. Place is an old establishment, however, kept up well. Not too many amenities, but we were satisfied.
