This hotel is comfortable but needs a lot of updating. For the location the price I paid -- about $140-- was cheap. Staff is polite but not that interested in you.

Overpriced for age of facility, size of room(especially bathroom), and amenities. Staff offered nothing, not even a greeting when arriving or exiting the property. Location excellent but for those prices could have stayed at a big name modern hotel.

Location was good.

Cons: Rebuild it!
Location: Only good thing. Location.
Very, very, very old... No bar, no room service. No food. No cold drinks. Just a room with a bed.

Good location close to Union Square

Pros: Character and location.
Location: Good location - walking distance from the BART station, Union square, shopping and cable car stop.
Good location close to Union Square and Cable car. Easy to get around city. Hotel is older but has lots of character. Staff was helpful. Our room was small but certainly adequate for sleeping.

Nice hotel close to center of the city.

Pros: I like the bathroom. Nice big bathroom associated with the room 212. 212 is the smallest room of the hotel. Bathroom is very nice.
Cons: Table position in the room.
Location: Buses are available. Take seven day unlimited pass 29 USD and go any where you like
Room heater makes some sound at night. Do not know why. Ask hotel stuff, they do not bother. Ultimately sound diminished

Fine if used just for a place to sleep.

Location: A few blocks (uphill) from Union Square. I felt safe walking to work in the morning and returning later at night.
I was looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay while working in SF for the week. The hotel was able to get me into my room early (10am) but was not able to get me a room with two double beds - the only options was one double bed or two TWIN beds. I'm not sure what adult would actually want to sleep in a twin bed, but since I had a friend crashing with me for a night, that's what I went with. Hotel hallways were stale (no central HVAC) and when I got to the room, was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as teeny as I had anticipated. The walls, trimwork, furniture, bathroom, etc was all so old and so rundown and the windows and window unit AC were filthy. The TV hardly worked, there was no mini fridge and I found ants and hairs in the bathroom/shower that were not mine. Luckily I like to travel a lot and have seen worse, but those of you that are used to normal American hotels, this is likely not the place for you. It worked for me since I was only in the hotel to sleep and shower.

Pros: The location was exceptional.
Cons: The linens, furniture, bathroom needs refreshing. The mattresses need to be replaced completely!
Location: Within walking distance of Union Square, shopping, transportation
The character of the hotel was fun. We expected the room to be small, so this was not a concern although you had to be careful not to hit your head on the wall when using the toilet. However, the hotel's website is misleading on the amenities offered. The "featherborne" mattress is a topper that does not improve the comfort of the very old mattress. We changed rooms after our first night to see if the comfort would improve, but it was to no avail. We attempted to cancel our reservation after two nights because of this and were not allowed to because we booked through Expedia. I've never experienced a problem with reservation changes in the past even when booking with Expedia. We were told the hotel's policy is that they will not change any reservation booked through a third party so beware if booking this hotel through any third party site. It also is said that a cot could be brought in if needed, but I'm not sure where that would fit!!
