Disappointed

Posted Nov 22, 2014
Pros: The location was exceptional.
Cons: The linens, furniture, bathroom needs refreshing. The mattresses need to be replaced completely!
Location: Within walking distance of Union Square, shopping, transportation
The character of the hotel was fun. We expected the room to be small, so this was not a concern although you had to be careful not to hit your head on the wall when using the toilet. However, the hotel's website is misleading on the amenities offered. The "featherborne" mattress is a topper that does not improve the comfort of the very old mattress. We changed rooms after our first night to see if the comfort would improve, but it was to no avail. We attempted to cancel our reservation after two nights because of this and were not allowed to because we booked through Expedia. I've never experienced a problem with reservation changes in the past even when booking with Expedia. We were told the hotel's policy is that they will not change any reservation booked through a third party so beware if booking this hotel through any third party site. It also is said that a cot could be brought in if needed, but I'm not sure where that would fit!!

just ok but definitely doable

Posted Nov 18, 2014
Pros: I think they allow dogs. This would make me stay again.
Cons: Elevator is painfully slow. Just take the stairs. Valet parking takes too long. 30-40 minute notice required to retrieve your car...too long.
Bed was fairly comfortable and the room was clean. It was tiny. Nothing but bare essentials, but it did the job and I got a 30% off rate by booking on my mobile device so that made it worth it. Good location if you want Union Square. Nothing to write home about in either direction. If you get a good price, go for it.

It was pleasent. The rooms were small, but understandable due to the buildings age.

Disappointed at first, but good place to stay

Posted Nov 13, 2014
Pros: Staff were great. Room was clean, bed was comfortable. Great water pressure.
Cons: Rooms were small and it is an old hotel. I think they have done a good job modernizing it. People just need to be aware it isn't a new hotel.
Location: Lots to do nearby. Two blocks from Union Square. One block from Trolly pickup. A Starbucks and Walgreens on the corner helped my long stay.
The pictures make it look super modern. It has been modernized quite a bit, but it is definitely a very old hotel. I am a total hotel snob and stayed there by myself for a whole week, and was hoping for the lap of luxury, so I was disappointed when I first walked in. However, I stayed there comfortably for the whole week. The bed was comfortable and everything was clean. They really did do a good job of modernizing it. The rates in the area are through the roof, so it was a pretty good value and close to lots of activity. I appreciated that since I was traveling alone. Staff was very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Kudos to the staff.

Charm, small rooms, great staff

Posted Nov 9, 2014
This has been my favorite SF hotel for decades. Has been through ups and downs, including a name change, but it's back as the Cartwright, renovated. Don't love the new lobby, but the rooms are nice. Very tiny bath rooms, lots of old SF charm, long-term staff. The area has gotten grittier over the years, but Sears Fine Foods is still around the corner.

Historic Charm

Posted Nov 7, 2014
Pros: Aesthetics of common area and room. Pleasant and straight to the point concierge. Bed comfort. Proximity to necessities.
Cons: Window insulation, A/C
A block from Union Square this hotel is steps from anything you need during your stay. Plenty of restaurants, cafes, shopping and pharmacy within a very short walk. I appreciated the historic look and feel of the common area and rooms. They produced a sense of warmth and were very inviting. The historic nature of the hotel means there are certain amenities that you will have to do without -- such as air-conditioning. That being said my room had a ceiling fan w/ remote and windows that opened to allow a nice breeze to circulate the room. I stayed on the top floor and it was surprisingly quiet within the hotel itself. As for outside of the hotel...well...this is a bustling city not a farm town so noise is going to happen. Thankfully my bed and it's 8 plush pillows were pleasantly comforting so I was fast sleep.

Ok hotel in a great location

Posted Nov 1, 2014
Pros: Location
Cons: Rooms could use a makeover.
Location: Great shopping, siteseeing, restaurants, and nightlife
If you're into posh hotels with large rooms and all the amenities - this is not the hotel for you. It's an old hotel with small rooms, most rooms face brick walls (don't let the lobby fool you). That said, it was fairly clean and the beds were comfortable. The location, however, is what's worth the money. Close to shopping, site seeing, excellent restaurants and nightlife locations.

walls are thjn

Posted Oct 30, 2014
The walls are very thin. Every night at around 11pm, I would hear noises that one does not want to hear. It was very disturbing, especially since most nights I was up working on academic projects.
