With telling names including Too Late, Vegamatic, Razor Blade, After Shave, and Lost Guide, you're sure to encounter some bumpy waves and spectacular splashes during the 5 mile (8 km) course.

The river takes its name from the passenger pigeon, now extinct, whose migration route once included the river valley. The river carves through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Cherokee National Forest, Martha Sundquist State Forest, and the Appalachian Trail.
