Backed by shops and cafés, South Beach is a great place to visit for its stretch of golden sand at the southern end of Hengchun. Known by locals as Nanwan Beach, the strand is a watersports hub, with all types of equipment available to rent. Enter the South Bay Recreation Area to use the excellent facilities and choose from varied dining options.
Rent all-terrain vehicles or tractors to race along the strand with your friends. Take a Jet Ski out on the water to ride along the waves. Deck chairs and umbrellas are also available, providing a place to relax with your family. Note that the waves here often offer excellent surfing conditions.
Lie back and enhance your tan while admiring the views of the sand, the sea and the tropical vegetation crowning the surrounding mountains. To the west stand the domed structures of the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant.
Cool down with a swim in the clear, refreshing water. Bring snorkeling gear to spot the array of colorful fish in the Bashi Channel. Stay for the glorious sunset and watch the sky and water begin to darken.
Enjoy a few drinks at the bars and restaurants at the back of the beach. Stay at one of the many hostels and hotels a little inland from the strand. You can rent scooters to explore the area with ease. Head into the historic center of Hengchun for a glimpse of old Taiwan.
South Beach is a little south from central Hengchun, on the way to Kenting National Park. Drive from the town center for 4 miles (6 kilometers) to get here in a little more than 10 minutes. For a fee, you can leave your car in the parking lot of the South Bay Recreation Area. While in this area, make sure to see nearby attractions such as White Sand Bay, Sheding Natural Park and the Sisal Industry Historical Monument.
