The Iglesia Sagrado Corazon de Jesus (Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) is a peaceful church nestled in Monterrey’s busy city center. Here, admire an interesting architectural style and see examples of religious artwork. Built between 1873 and 1904, the Iglesia Sagrado Corazon de Jesus is one of Monterrey’s oldest parish churches.
Start your visit by admiring the church’s impressive interior design, most notably the five-tiered entrance and bell tower, which display multiple columns and arches. Look for the large statue of Jesus that stands in a tree-filled courtyard to the left of the main entrance. Step inside the church to find an interesting series of art, among which are 11 colorful stained-glass windows.
Go to the church’s altar to see an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus designed in Catalan style. Investigate the works that adorn the right lateral wall. They include a crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and St. John, St. Joseph holding baby Jesus and a portrait of St. Anthony of Padua. Don’t miss the painting by local artist Elegio Fernández, which portrays Jesus being baptized by St. John the Baptist. Look above the main entrance, where a tubular organ sits in the interior of an arched tower.
Located just north of Macroplaza, the church is a short walk from some of Monterrey’s other major sights. Visit the Museo del Palacio at the Palacio de Gobierno to find displays of art, clothing and photography that showcase the culture of the state of Nuevo León. Later in the day, visit the nearby Museo de Historia Mexicana and Museo del Noreste (Museum of the Northeast).
The Iglesia Sagrado Corazon de Jesus is open daily and admission is free. The church is closed to the public during private ceremonies, such as baptisms and weddings.
