Geckos were so entertaining to watch running all over and coquis lulled us to sleep at night. One thing to note: be sure to grab some bug spray, the skeeters are vicious out on the lanai! It is about 40 minutes from Hilo, the last 5 miles from the house consists of literally a roller coaster of a road (paved and fun) but the last mile to the house is not far from rock climbing (5mph tops, suv required, no cars) The property is largely unkept, but the inside of the house is well taken care of and includes most of what you'd need. “Cons: no hot water in the shower or house. At all. Ran ONLY the hot water line & never got hot water. Hubby bathed in kitchen sink with water from tea kettle. No privacy. At all. Other houses can be seen clearly from all windows & shower of this house. That deck? It's for anyone to use & anyone on it can look right down into your shower. “We had a fantastic stay at the Rainforest Cottage. The property was extremely clean and very private. The kitchen was well stocked with everything needed and there was a large supply of items for use on day excursions (coolers, snorkeling gear, etc). “Location and ocean view was FANTASTIC. While it's not a 5-star/ $1000 per night hotel, it has everything you would need/ expect from an excellent beach house. We were only a group of 2, but the house easily could accommodate 6 people. Great jumping off point to see sites on this side of the island (Hilo, Volcano, towns that existed a few years ago but then were taken by lava). Don't miss Uncle Robert's on Wednesday night with other locals. It was a great time. Also, the Lava Flow museum in Pahoa……
