Must Do Pumpkin Festivals

John Reckner didn’t grow up dreaming to one day become “lord of the gourd,” but it’s an earned title he doesn’t take lightly. Some three decades ago, Reckner, at the time living in Vermont, laid his eyes on a copy of Yankee Magazine. On the cover of the New England-centric publication was a photo of a few dozen pumpkins, all brilliantly aflame for a Green Mountains fall harvest spectacular.

Passion For Pumpkins founder and “Lord of the Gourd” John Reckner

From just the image alone, Reckner felt a calling to go, and it was an event just as internally luminous for him as those gleaming pumpkins. “After I saw them, I was taking my dog for a walk,” Reckner says. “I thought about those pumpkins. I thought about more detailed, intricate images on them and putting them in an attractive landscape setting. And, that was the origin of it.”

“It” is the more aptly described lifelong pursuit Reckner has been on to carve the world’s pumpkins in stunning detail for shows across the United States thanks to Passion For Pumpkins, his multimedia production company that’s been transforming landscapes with illuminated designs for 25 years.

“Thirty-four years later, I never thought I’d be doing this,” he says. Now, one of his most widely-known shows is the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, an event held annually at the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, which in 2021 attracted a record 170,000 visitors.

It’s a job Reckner doesn’t take lightly, plotting out themes years in advance, creating just the right music playlist, recruiting artists (Reckner has a preference for tattoo artists thanks to their unique skill set), and ensuring he has enough supply on hand for the thousands of pumpkins needed to sustain the event for an entire month. But it’s all in a day’s work for Reckner, because he believes in the deeper power of a seemingly simple fall festival. He believes in its power to bring people just a little joy in an otherwise chaotic world. “We just try to do our best,” he says.

    • Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular

      Rhode Island

Come see Reckner’s handiwork in real life at the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at the Roger Williams Zoo all October long. Each year, the zoo invites guests to roam its pumpkin-lined pathways and experience a truly stunning illuminated event. As Reckner explains, the spectacular takes on a new theme each year, and in 2022 it’s taking on the history of television, meaning pumpkins will be carved to look like your favorite television characters, resemble historic televised events, and, as the spectacular added, take on everyone from “Betty White to Walter White.” The best part? The proceeds go toward the ongoing care of the zoo’s animals and its educational and conservation initiatives.

      Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival

      Germany

The people of Ludwigsburg, a town in southern Germany, take their Halloween duties very seriously. Each year, its palace hosts what is heralded as the largest pumpkin festival on earth. The season kicks off here much earlier than most, with the grounds of the palace becoming a blanket of plump, orange gourds. According to the town’s website, it displays some 450,000 pumpkins over the season from 600 different varieties of gourd, including both edible and ornamental pumpkins carved to look elaborate, beautiful, and of course just a little bit scary.

      Avon Valley's Pumpkin Patch Festival

      Bristol, England

Get some fresh air, pick up a pumpkin, and take in a show at Avon Valley’s Pumpkin Patch festival. Located about a 2.5 hour drive from London, the pumpkin patch is a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city living. Each year, the grounds are overtaken by the orange fruit (yes, it’s a fruit), which guests can pick from the event area or pluck straight from the pumpkin patch. On the grounds guests can also hop on a fair ride, see a performance, play pumpkin paintball, fire an apple cannon, and enjoy plenty of tasty fall treats too.

      Pumpkin Fest

      Half Moon Bay, California

Half Moon Bay has been honoring fall with its annual Pumpkin Fest for a full 50 years. Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta

      Maine

Head to Maine to see a few larger-than-life pumpkins tell the story of community. Each year, a group of artists from Maine come together to decorate a few dozen Atlantic Giant pumpkins, weaving a tale about the town, which go on display in downtown Damariscotta and Newcastle for the aptly named Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta. Why the term “regatta?” Because when the viewing is over, the pumpkins are hollowed and placed in the Damariscotta River for a quick ride in the water (or sink…depending on how well the pumpkin boat is built).
