After you've ticked off the well-known attractions in Miraflores, there's heaps more to see in the region. Grab the keys to a rental car, toss your luggage in the trunk and get out on the open road. We've come up with some drives we think you'll love:

• You'll find Mall of the Andes and loads of other intriguing attractions in Ambato. From Miraflores, it's roughly 75 miles away.
• Next stop? Esmeraldas, which is around 110 miles away. Malecón Las Palmas is one local draw card you really shouldn't miss.

If you don't possess a driver's license issued in Ecuador, then you may need to acquire an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your place of residence to be allowed to rent a car.
