Dinefwr Castle can be found within the 800 acre National Trust site of Dinefwr Park. Again a relatively small car park for an attraction of this size which includes the castle, Newton House, Deer Park and many wildlife walks including a Boardwalk as well as some of the oldest Oak trees in the UK. The inclusive price of £9.50 per adult was duly paid and we initially made a beeline for the ruins of Dinefwr Castle. The castle is believed to have been constructed under the instructions of Rhodri the Great and then rebuilt in the late 1100's by Rhys ap Gruffydd (Lord Rhys who built Carreg Cennen Castle) The castle has walkways which give superb views of Deer Park to the north and Towy Valley (and River Towy) to the west and south. After visiting the historic Welsh ruins we walked along a number of the trails before ending up at Newton House for a well earned coffee! #lksawaydays gives Dinefwr Castle and park a 👍](https://images.trvl-media.com/place/6048670/96bab090-8e04-4c37-b406-65e212db6f8f.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=1040&h=580&q=mediumHigh) ![#lksawaydays 4b/2020 Continuing to step back in time we travelled the short 5km journey to our 2nd castle as part of our Welsh castle double header at Dinefwr. Car packed, satnav set and the ipod on playing the back catalogue of the Manchester Orchestra (top tunes) Our first of the two planned castles was Carreg Cennen in the village of Trap inside the Brecon Beacons National Park. We arrived as the weather seemed to get murkier, perhaps a little bit of luck kept the rain away, we parked up in the free, quiet but again rather small car park. The site has a cafe and shop, these can be found around from the car park as you enter, all of which sit below the prominent ruins dwelling upon the hill. After paying £5 per adult we hiked up the slope and enjoyed the impressive views of Towy Valley, on a clear day it must be spectacular! The six towered castle built in the time of Lord Rhys in the late 1100's has sat in ruin since 1462, once inside you can move around the skeleton freely, walking across the base or along stairways to see more of the structure. Make sure you head down to the naturally made cave which runs under the castle and travels deep into the hillside. Be cautious, once you start walking along the cave it's pitch black and a little slippery under foot, we used our phone touches but you can hire torches at the pay hut for £1.50. #lksawaydays give Carreg Castle a 👍](https://images.trvl-media.com/place/6048670/bdbdb079-7adf-4943-b6a2-2e56f9aa47ab.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=1040&h=580&q=mediumHigh) ![#lksawaydays 4b/2020 Continuing to step back in time we travelled the short 5km journey to our 2nd castle as part of our Welsh castle double header at Dinefwr.
