Casa Carlos, dating to the early 1800s, is one of the few properties in Taos available for rental that is listed in both the National Register of Historic Places (United States Department of Interior) and the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties. The former home and studio of Charles “Carlos” Berninghaus, a noted Taos artist and son of Oscar Berninghaus, who was one of the founders of the Taos art colony in the 1920s. This beautiful example of an adobe casita was authentically restored and beautifully landscaped by its former owner, the founder of Taos’ El Monte Sagrado Resort. The interior, exterior and grounds have been carefully preserved and methodically tended to make this home a treasure for returning guests who call Casa Carlos their “home away from home”.
