A cosmopolitan blend of culture, architecture and fine food mixes with royal tradition in the Belgian capital.

Belgium is known as a producer of some of the finest chocolate, beer and dairy products in Europe. Its capital, Brussels, is rapidly becoming a culinary destination. The capital is the largest metropolitan region in Belgium, and its proximity to Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt means it has a truly cosmopolitan feel. Brussels is home to a large population of immigrants who create an eclectic mix of cultures. The locals speak a mix of French and Dutch so street names, signs and information centers feature both languages.

While the city is large, it remains manageable. Many attractions can be reached on foot from the city center. A walk through Brussels is a walk through history. Many of the locations that helped form the young nation of Belgium are here. See where the Belgian revolution began at Brussels Park, the largest park in the city. Royal tradition has long been central to the Belgian identity at the edge of the park you can visit the Royal Palace of Brussels. Hear an informative historical education at BELvue, the national history museum of Belgium.

Brussels is a city looking forward as much as it respects its past, and the contemporary culture of the city is thriving. See leading modern artists at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. Appreciate the Belgian sense of humor by visiting Manneken Pis, the iconic statue of a urinating child.

Eat with the locals at the Place du Grand Sablon, a bustling city square surrounded by restaurants, chocolatiers and antique dealers. Make the journey to the Cantillon Brewery to sample traditional Belgian beers brewed using a century-old recipe.

Brussels has a reputation of cold winters and damp summers. However, temperatures in July and August rarely get higher than 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius), providing a relaxing change from the sweltering heat much of Europe experiences at this time. The Brussels International Airport serves Brussels, but many visitors choose to arrive on the Eurostar or other express train services. An affordable and efficient metro system connects all 19 municipalities of the city.

Getting around Brussels

Brussels is a compact city and the best way to explore its historic core is simply to walk around. Outside the city center, get around using the excellent public transportation system. It includes a metro network, public buses, trams and intercity trains. Within the city, all the public transportation services are run by STIB. This means a single ticket can be used across all modes of transportation. Visit the Federal Public Service Mobility and TransportOpens in a new window website.Browse Brussels rental cars.

Best time to visit

Like many European destinations, Brussels has mild but sunny summers, cool springs and falls, and cold winters. The warmest weather is in June through August, but this is also the time of year that sees a major tourist influx and long lines at major attractions. Visit in shoulder season – that’s spring or fall – for less competition for rooms and smaller crowds at sights.

The week between Christmas and New Years is WAY TOO CROWDED and I would never go back during that week. This was my second visit to Brussels, and it's a great city and an excellent jumping off point for other European cities.

Getting around Belgium is very easy & for someone from CA, nothing is all that far away. Brussells is a place full of history & beautiful architechture, breweries & little cafes. I found the people to be friendly & very accepting of foreigners.
