Just south of New Plymouth, visit Burgess Park, a neighborhood crisscrossed with stunning waterways and riverside parks. It contains the awe-inspiring Lake Mangamahoe and its surrounding forest of redwoods and Californian radiata pine trees. Climb to the Mount Taranaki Lookout on the northern shore of the lake for an iconic vista of the snowy jewel in the crown of nearby Egmont National Park.
Ride a mountain bike or a horse along the nature path that traces the 4-mile (6-kilometer) perimeter of the lake. Stop for a picnic on the shore and spot geese, adorable little ducklings and black swans floating on the water.
A little southwest of the lake is the Taranaki Aviation Technology and Transport Museum, which showcases all types of relics and gadgets from a bygone era. Inspect the collection of agricultural machinery, military equipment and maritime tools in the eclectic displays.
In the northern part of the district is Tūpare Garden, a former family-owned estate on the Waiwhakaiho River. Admire the Tudor design of the house and wander along the well-laid paths to see gingko trees, rhododendrons and other stunning floral displays.
Stroll south along the riverbanks to reach the Meeting of the Waters Scenic Reserve. On a hot summer afternoon, go swimming in the refreshing water. Relax on the grassy bank and listen to the soft flow of the water over the rocks.
On the western edge of the North Island of New Zealand, Burgess Park lies between New Plymouth and Egmont Village. From the center of New Plymouth, drive southeast for almost 4 miles (6 kilometers) to get here in about 10 minutes. Travel around the area to discover landmarks such as Egmont National Park, the Brooklands Zoo and Te Kainga Marire.
