The entire house and grounds are available to guests with the exception of the first floor of the detached artist studio. (Guests have access to the upstairs portion through the sliding glass doors found by going up the stairs and around the back of the studio.)

Directions and access instructions will be emailed to you prior to arrival.

A vehicle is necessary for getting around the area.

PROXIMITY
- Ingles Market, a full-service grocery store with traditional, natural and organic selections and a full-service pharmacy, is 12 miles from the house.
- Walmart is 12 miles.
- National Mineral Museum is 15 miles.
- Closest eat-in/take-out option at 4.8 miles.
- Downtown Spruce Pine & Riverside Park is 9 miles.
- Hospital & ER is 8.6 miles.

DRIVEWAY
The gravel drive can be steep for some vehicles that are especially low to the ground, such as sports cars and Mini-Coopers, etc. The owners have a truck and a typical sedan and have no trouble getting up the driveway. Guests may park on the lower part of the driveway if they would prefer. Four-wheel drive is not required, but if you are renting a vehicle, this option might be a good choice for the mountains - especially in winter. Chains for tires are another good option if you are visiting in the winter and you are concerned about getting around. The driveway is plowed when there is snow or ice. If you have any questions, please be sure and let us know.

Note: Four-wheel drive is not required, but is helpful when there is snow or ice. In cases of winter weather, if you do not have four wheel drive, we recommend parking at the bottom of the driveway.

TIPS FOR DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS
The key to driving in the mountains, especially steep gravel passes, is to drive with confidence and keep your momentum. If you are driving on a road that is steep or problematic go low and slow - about 6-12 miles an hour - and do not stop. Also, GPS is fairly accurate for businesses, but for residences and small mountain roads it can be inaccurate. We suggest using our directions to get to the cabin initially. If you have questions about how to get somewhere, please let us know. We are happy to help!

PENLAND & THE HOME'S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The home was built by artist/sculptor Bill Brown, the first director of Penland School of Crafts after the founder, Lucy Morgan, retired.

Penland School is important to the region of Appalachia because in the 1920s Miss Lucy, as she was often called, provided education and resources to local women teaching them how to weave and sell their handmade goods. This developed into a cottage industry that helped to improve the circumstances of these women and also gave birth to Penland.

The school now provides instruction in all areas of craft from weaving, pottery, glass and ceramics to metalwork, printmaking, letterpress, photography and much more. The campus occupies 420 acres on the mountain at the other end of the same road as Conley House. Visually inspiring all by itself, the campus is open for tours by appointment and has a catalog of courses that are open to the public and are designed for a range of skill levels.

Also open to the public is Penland Gallery, which offers fine craft in all media made by skilled craftspeople from all over the world. The school also has a coffee shop and gift shop! They love to have visitors, so stop on by! Because of the school and the natural beauty of the mountains, the area is filled with artists and craftspeople, making it a truly unique area of the country that you'll want to explore.

Prior to your stay, we require you to complete a pre-arrival form and sign & agree to our rental conditions.

A work of art

We've traveled to North Carolina for many years to take a nice summer break. This is the best place we've found! An immaculate house with an incredible view. The artwork and unique architecture set this place apart. Lisa (the hostess) was super responsive and helpful. This was a trip we will always remember!!!

Beautiful Views

The views are exactly as described! The house is well equipped and laid out for 2 couples. My parents who are avid birders loved walking along the dirt road with their binoculars. It is also ideally situated for the Blue Ridge Parkway, Penland is down the road, and other walks are nearby. Highly Recommended!

Can't Beat the View or the Location

The Conley House is just the place to stay if you are looking to be close to the art of the Penland area of NC, but also want to feel remote and have the lovely views of the mountains. We are "into" the arts and crafts of the area; and it's fabulous to live surrounded by the art and artists who make it all possible. We will definitely try the Conley House again when we're next back in the area. It will be our first choice!

I can't say enough about this cabin. It's quiet and beautiful - the views are amazing. Secluded enough to be private - but close enough to civilization to be convenient. The attention to detail makes the stay extra special - from the unique artwork throughout the cabin to the musical wind chimes on the deck - a very homey, comfortable feel overall. Customer service is great - Lisa went above and beyond to make this vacation happen for my family. I will be back and highly recommend to anyone planning a mountain vacation.

Beautiful View

We loved our stay near Penland School of Craft. The property was easy to check into, had a comfortable open floor plan, and an incredible long range Mountain View. Both rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. Lisa also had a packnplay for my 1.5 year old son which was nice. The landscaping is gorgeous, and we were able to pick fresh blueberries, blackberries and mint right in the property. I hope to come back soon!

Mountains Majesty

This home is very welcoming and has the most wonderful views as if the comfort of the place wasn't enough. Right in the middle of the high country and accessible to the Parkway and all the attractions that draw us all to the Linville Falls Area. I have been staying in this area for the past twenty years and must admit this will be my choice for a home to borrow while in the mountains henceforth.

Extraordinary!

I hesitate writing this review for fear The Conley House will be all booked up the next time we wish to return. However, in all fairness to the owners, I must say our stay was as wonderful as we expected, having returned another year. Everything about this house is special-the views, the beds, the location, the peacefulness. If you are looking for a base to access Roan Mountain or any other hikes in the area, great food finds, like The Tin Shed, some of Western NC best craft galleries, this is a great place to stay.

Beautiful Mountain View

Beautiful views of the mountains everywhere in and on the property. Bed was very comfortable and the property is very secluded and private. The only issue I had was when I turned on the bathroom heater it made a pop sound and didn’t come on. I texted Lisa to tell her this in case of a possible electrical danger and never heard back from her

A lovely 5-day visit

It is roomy and beautiful with such a relaxing feel. We grilled three nights, cooked inside once, and used the fire pit daily. Super comfy beds and really nice quality appliances and dishes. We didn't use the games, puzzles, or TV (we tend to just sit and chat) but they all seemed very nice. Can't say enough good things about the quietness, privacy, and views. Well equipped kitchen. Loved the big kitchen island where you could sit around and snack and visit. A safe feeling despite the rural setting. I would certainly return.

Incredible views and living art within the house as well as outside...

The house is perfectly situated with an incredible view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, extremely quiet and beautifully decorated. All amenities included made the stay extra special, from the deep Jet Tub with bath salts and oils, to a kitchen with artistic flare and functionality infused with incredible taste and practicality. The art work throughout the house resembles walking around a museum and your eye catching something new and beautiful in every room.. every crevice. We will be returning to stay at this house in years to come. Highly recommended.

Tranquil perfection !

We came for our first ever stay in this area, bringing friends and 2 sets of dogs. You step into a setting that is warm, inviting, and visually rewarding— the inside showcases local art and ceramics. Furnishings are comfy, functional and thoughtfully chosen. Any- and everything you might need in a kitchen was available. I tend to travel with my own favorite kitchen implements, but put them all back in the car:) The property itself is beautiful with stunning views and a lovely terrace. Within 5 minutes of arriving, we knew we were coming back!!

Enjoy NC mountains and the Conley House

Our getaway to Conley House proved to be a relaxing fun filled week, despite the cold, windy weather. We did get to enjoy the patio the first day and it was relaxing just taking in the scenery. It was wonderful waking to the purple mountain majesty as the sunrise cast a purple hue on the mountains. The cabin was extremely clean, beautifully decorated and the kitchen had everything you needed for cooking. The beds were extremely comfortable. We explored the area from Roan Mountain to Little Switzerland and included some visits to local wineries….Banner Elk being our favorite. There is a lot to do in the area. Enjoying the cabin for a relaxing get away is certainly recommended. Lisa was very responsive to my questions and was very helpful in giving advice on things to do in the area. We would highly recommend this rental.
