Explore hidden caves and arches at Prainha Beach on Portugal’s Iberian Peninsula. To the east, dramatic cliffs form João de Arens Point. Prainha is one of the region’s most striking beaches. Look for chasms, ledges and caves formed by thousands of years of salty surf. Add your own message of love to those carved into the walls. The beach is at the base of sheer rock faces. Rock falls can happen, so keep a safe distance from the edge, whether you’re at the top or bottom.
Divers love this part of the Algarve coastline for its incredible underwater attractions, including the Ocean Revival project. This large artificial reef consists of four decommissioned vessels from the Portuguese Navy. The diving conditions here are ideal, with calm waters more than 300 days a year and temperatures between 57 and 72 F (14 and 22 C).
Beach amenities include lifeguards, first-aid, showers, restrooms and a few concessions. Arrive early in the morning to claim beach space. As the tide rises, the sandy area of this cozy beach gets smaller. Prainha Beach is one of the region’s least populated beaches.
After a day on the beach, explore Portimão, one of the western Algarve’s largest cities. Wander the pedestrian-friendly shopping streets, admire the historic architecture and dine on catch-of-the-day seafood at one of many restaurants. The most picturesque part of town is the scenic promenade, once the city’s fishing docks, which passes the peaceful plazas of the old town.
Prainha is about 1 mile (2 kilometers) from the fishing village of Alvor and Praia da Rocha. Access the beach area from Prainha Village by taking the elevator or descending a long set of stairs. Park at the clifftop. Caniçal buses serve the area, stopping at the beach upon request.
