With beaches on the North and Baltic Sea coastlines, Aalbaek is a popular summer resort set towards the northernmost tip of Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula. Discover beautiful white sand beaches that are ideal for relaxation and watersports. Climb to the top of a huge sand dune for views of Aalbaek’s countryside, walk amid tree plantations and shop for handicrafts at specialty shops.
Backed by grassy dunes, the white sands of Aalbaek Beach stretch for miles along the shores of the Kattegat sea. Swim in the calm water, enjoy long walks and watch people windsurfing. Spot colorful fishing boats at Aalbaek Harbor and fish for eel and flatfish from the harbor’s piers. On the city’s western coastline, Skiveren Beach is an all-but deserted North Sea beach.
Plan a trip to the Raabjerg Mile, a migrating sand dune that evokes images of African and Arabian deserts. Views of the North Sea and rural landscapes await from the top of this 131-feet (40-meter) tall natural landmark. Get here by following a footpath from Raabjerg Church. If you like to explore by bike then pedal the 24-mile (38-kilometer) long Aalbaek to Hulsig route and spot birds of prey.
Dedicate time to experience the charm of the city, where shops and restaurants occupy typical yellow-painted and red-roofed houses. Aalbaek Kirke is a pretty parish church that dates back to 1897. Spend a day with the family at Farm Fun, a wildlife park with activities such as animal feeding, children’s playgrounds and pony rides. Admire tall spruce and pine trees at the Aalbaek Klitplantage.
Just a 20-minute drive north of the city is Denmark’s northernmost settlement, Skagen. Come here to see work by the world-famous Skagen Painters at the Skagens Museum. Amble along Grenen, a natural sandbar at the meeting point of the North and Baltic seas.
Located in the Frederikshavn Municipality of North Jutland, Aalbaek is about an hour’s drive from Aalborg Airport. Do as the Danes do and stay overnight at coastal campsites during the long sunny days of summer.
