A CENTURY OF GETTING PEOPLE ON THE ROUTE

A company older than the road
Route 66 begins in downtown Chicago, and so did Hertz. The company started renting cars there in 1918, eight years before the road was designated, back when driving across the country was still an unusual thing to try. The century that followed belonged to both of them, as the road got paved end to end and the motels, diners and filling stations went up along it. You don't have to drive all 2,448 miles to get the point of it. Pick a car up in Chicago and drop it on the coast, or take one state at a time and fly home from there. Hertz has counters in every state the route crosses, and the fleet runs from something small and economical to a convertible for the stretch where you want the roof down.
