Wildflower Blooms

Stop and smell the tulips

Nothing signals the beginning of spring more than colorful fields of wildflowers, and there are tons of beautiful options right here in the United States. From the technicolor tulips in Washington to Texas’s bluebonnets, here’s where to find gorgeous blooms this season.

    • Skagit Valley

      Washington

You don’t have to fly to Holland to see endless rows of tulips; instead, head straight for Washington. Located in the northwestern part of the state, Skagit Valley is known for its Tulip Festival, held annually April 1–30. Aside from live music and artwork, the festival allows visitors to witness the valley’s famous fields of tulips and daffodils—they only bloom once a year, so plan accordingly.

The next time you’re in Los Angeles, head 65 miles northeast to the hills of Lancaster to see one of the country’s most impressive wildflower shows. The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is world-renowned for its spring explosion of poppies, a “super bloom” that occurs when there’s a perfect combination of sunlight, rainfall, and other natural factors. Standing before the rolling hills of bright orange flowers is definitely one for the bucket lists.
