Description

Leave Marrakech behind and head toward the Atlantic coast of Essaouira. Your guide tells you about the history of the town and shows you characteristics of the 15th and 18th centuries, such as ramparts, the fishing port and harbor, Skala (market), and its quaint Medina.

Stroll through the picturesque blue and white town with the ocean in the background. Meander through its maze-like streets and explore its tranquil squares with white houses and street-side cafés. Your guide explains the Portuguese influence in the town—it was once called “Mogador”—and shows you the Portuguese-built medieval citadel.

It is then time to go to Skala, the municipal market. See countless artisans working in their workshops and the many arts that skilled craftsmen create. Walk through markets where stalls groan under the weight of colorful fruit and fresh vegetables, or simply wander through the harbor and witness the hive of activity at the water's edge.

If you choose to, enjoy a scrumptious lunch served at one of the many restaurants that line the coast. Before heading back to Marrakech, your guide takes you to key points of the city, including the port, Medina—the old town filled with souks—and Mellah, a Jewish quarter.

The local guide, Rashid, was one of the best we have had the pleasure to go out a tour with him our time in Morocco. Nothing was too much for him. Our three hours with him flew by! Rashid was very experienced, knowledgeable, attentive and fully engaged with giving us a good experience. He ensured the tour was tailored to our needs as he got a sense of our interests and enthusiasm about the history and socio-economics of the city, and Morocco. We shared an interest in the secular churches, and he made a quick call and arranged for us to have a private viewing of the new Jewish exhibition!! How good was that!! We asked for specific items in the medina and he ensured he took us to the best purveyors, and allowed us time to shop. As a local of Essaouira, he had so much insider knowledge which he shared about the city and its inhabitants, past and present making it all so much more interesting. To finish off our day, he recommended a very good fish restaurant on the seafront.

The outing went well going to Essaouria--bathroom stop, stop for the goats in trees and for the Argan Oil display. The tour of the city was good. Going back to Marrakech-- the driver went very fast, no bathroom break and very loud music. I asked the driver to turn down the music; he turned it off and then turned it back on-- still loud.

In general I had a good experience but the distance is quite far which gives the tourist little time to browse around
