Description

Journey to the hallowed Civil War battlefields in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Explore the Gettysburg Visitor Center on your own, and then take a guided walking tour of the battlegrounds to see what life was like for soldiers in 1863.

Your time in Gettysburg begins with a visit to the Farnsworth House, where you can see remnants left over from the battle and get an introduction to military life during the Civil War. At the new visitor center, watch a 22-minute introductory film, “A New Birth of Freedom,” and then go to the museum to explore the time leading up to the battle of Gettysburg, the battle itself, and the long-lasting effects on the town after the Civil War ended. Then take in the breathtaking Gettysburg Cyclorama.

Longer than a football field and as tall as a 4-story structure, the Gettysburg Cyclorama oil painting immerses visitors in the fury of Pickett’s Charge during the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg. The painting is displayed exactly the way artist originally intended with an overhead canopy and a 3-D diorama foreground realistically featuring broken fences, shattered trees, and a cannon.

The trip concludes with a comprehensive, 2-hour tour of the Gettysburg battlefield. Your tour, led by a licensed battlefield guide, is always unique because different rangers and guides offer varying perspectives on the battle. Licensed battlefield guides train for years and must pass extensive tests administered by the National Park Service to qualify to give tours.

A good day trip which there was obviously a bit of travel time. I ws disappointed that we spent too short a time on the field itself. After visiting the Shriver house we were then taken to an outlet facility for an hour lunch. My suggestion is that the customer is given an option to spend more time at the battlefield museum (i had brought my own lunch) and i found this break frustrating and a waste of my time. The guide was knowledgable but as stated above too little time was allowed for walking the field itself. I would not recommend this tour in its current form for these reasons.

It was a two hour drive to Gettysburg from DC. We first spent an hour at a local civil War residence in town, then two more hours at the Gettysburg visitor center to learn more about the battle and site. Finally, it was a two hour tour of the various points around the actual battlefield with a very knowledgeable, if dry, guide. Overall a very good learning experience for any Civil War/history buff.

The driver was great. He was very knowledgeable about DC and got us safely to our destination. The guide at Gettysburg knew his history and had a great sense of humor. Overall a nice side trip to our DC vacation.
