Description

Visit Magdalena Island to see thousands of Magellanic Penguins. Dress warmly and meet at a centrally located point in Punta Arenas where a minivan takes you to the pier.

Located 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Punta Arenas in the middle of the Strait of Magellan, Magdalena Island is a must for animal lovers. The island, a protected area since 1982, was renamed Los Pinguinos Natural Moment. It has an interesting ecosystem, home to more than 120,000 couples of penguins which come during the summer to reproduce and other birds such as cormorants and Andean seagulls.

Reach the island, hosting the greatest colony of penguins in the region, after about a 40-minute ride. Once you disembark from the boat, you have about an hour to walk around and take pictures. You may complete the visit by reaching The Lighthouse, an environmental interpretation center, to learn about the history of the strait and the ecological richness of the islands.

Despite telling everyone to meet at the tour office at 6:30 AM, the tour didn't leave until 8:00 AM. Several tour groups were told to meet at the office at the same time, so not everyone could fit inside, leaving several dozen people to shiver outside. One grumpy person was checking people in at the back of the office. Otherwise, no one was available to give any instructions or tell us what was going on. Everyone was very confused. Eventually people randomly started boarding one of the several empty tour buses outside the office to escape the cold. This is when a representative of the company finally emerged and told them to stop. Yet everyone was told to board the buses a few minutes later, so there was no need to tell people to stop boarding the buses since that's where everyone ended up eventually anyway. The visits to the two islands were fine. You can't disembark at the first island; it's look-from-the-boat only. We could've used more time at the second island. We were rushed out.
