The cool, Picturesque city of Kandy, the capital of the central province of Sri Lanka is widely acknowledge as country’s religious and cultural capital, established as a royal city at the beginning of the 14th century it was the final kingdom of Sri Lanka’s long line of kings, when the city was ceded to the British in 1815.
Positioned at an elevated location 506 meters above sea level in a wooded valley flanked by the dense Udawattakelle Forest at one perimeter and the vast Kandy Lake at the other, the core of the city is a series of old places buildings and numerous temples and Shrines. Kandy is the home of the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. In celebration of the continued rites and rituals of the lost kingdoms of the Sri Lankan people, Kandy was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988.
