Description

Take a trip back to Charlottesville's war-ravaged past with an award-winning Civil War historian. Along the way, learn facts about the city's support of the Confederate army and the University of Virginia's involvement, and go to the sites of the slave block at Court Square and the Battle of Rio Hill.

After your guide picks you up from your hotel, head to Court Square, a somber place where slave auctions took place. Learn the grim facts about these auctions, which frequently took place on plantations but would sometime occur in town on court days when other goods were being traded.

Next, travel to the University of Virginia where the Charlottesville General Hospital was headquartered. Discover how during the Civil War the school's rotunda, the town hall, and the courthouse, as well as nearby homes and hotels, were converted into a makeshift hospital that treated more than 22,000 wounded soldiers. Later in the war, the university surrendered to the union using a bed sheet as a flag of truce, and Charlottesville was spared from destruction when the city leaders surrendered to General George Custer.

Your final stop is Rio Hill, the location of the skirmish between the Union cavalry and the Confederate encampment it tried to take over, with Custer withdrawing after underestimating the strength of his foe. As you return to your hotel, your guide answers any remaining questions from the day while pointing out other interesting local attractions.
