Nice hotel
Posted Jan 16, 2013 on Hotels.com
The hotel is very well located & beautiful inside, especially the inside courtyard. Food & drink not overpriced. Overall very nice. On the negatives, the breakfast was very disappointing with little choice & parking cost 16 euros per night. Probably would return though.

The room was a bit small and bare, but otherwise a good hotel in a good location.

Marvellous patio
Posted Jan 7, 2012
Pros: The patio.
Cons: The lack of the advertised safe in the room; sure, reception will put valuables in their safe, but this is very inconvenient.
The hotel is in the Cathedral Square of the walled city, convenient for sightseeing in the city and surroundings, and with many restaurants nearby. The hotel staff are relaxed and helpful. The clientele seemed very mixed: anglo-saxon tourists, Spanish people on holiday, families with children, some conference guests. All seemed pretty comfortable with the hotel. The enormous patio of the palace, now glazed over to form an enormous "lounge", absorbs them all. Our room overlooked a second courtyard, so we didn't hear any street noise at all.

Palacio Fit for a King?
Posted Jan 22, 2012 on Hotels.com
This hotel used to be a palace; you can't tell from all of the rooms (I wasn't, unfortunately, in one of the spectacular ones they posted on their website), but you can tell from the general ambiance and common spaces. Not all rooms are wheelchair accessible, as a result of the palace's strange layout, but the hotel has done a great job installing ramps, lifts, and automated doors in the common spaces. The breakfast buffet was the best I've ever seen, and for a small town such as Ávila, I find that exceptional. Service in the Cloister restaurant was not top notch, but slow service and long meal-times are Spanish cultural mainstays, so I can't fault that: just don't head down if you're hungry and want to order right away. The staff was, otherwise, very friendly and helpful, with good English language skills. My room was lovely, quiet, and comfortable: the "king" bed was actually two singles pushed together with the sheets tucked in separately under the comforter. Velada is right next to the cathedral and near plenty of local landmarks and eateries, and the bus station is only a 15 minute walk away.

Wonderful hotel, a true palace
Posted Jan 18, 2011
Location: Avila is one of the most lovely places we have ever visited. It oozes historical charm and atmosphere. The paseo along the wall walk in the evening sun kept drawing us back.
This was a magical hotel. Although it looks old and interesting from the outside, the inside reveals its real secret - and enormous covered patio in which you can sit and read, have a coffee or eat. The patio is surrounded by three balconies which are the corridors leading to the guest rooms. The corridors are furnished with antiques and the rooms are also well furnished. It was difficult to drag ourselves away from the patio as it was so beautiful. We did not dine in the hotel as Avila has many decent restaurants but did have breakfast. The basic continental breakfast choice is minimal and they keep a beady eye on you to make sure you do not have more.

"Hot" Time in Avila
Posted Jan 29, 2011
Arriving into Avila in late May when the temperature was over 90 degrees F., we looked forward to respite and a rest at this hotel. We were shown to our room which was the equivalent of a blast furnace; it hadn't been aired out and was over 100 degrees F. When we turned on the a.c. it wouldn't start, so we called down to the desk. We were informed that the buiilding-wide system had not been started because it was' too early' for a.c. Going down to the desk for clarification we were told that the hotel doesn't turn its a.c. system on that early in the year because "it's not necessary". Not necessary? Our room was unbearable. The others they offered us were as bad or worse. The front desk area and the room behind it was so hot that the staff had multiple fans going. But no fans were made available to guests. After repeatedly asking for fans, we were presented with one old fan like we were disrespectful, ungrateful children. The staff was rude and surly--probably because they were so uncomfortable, too. During our stay we asked repeatedly and regularly for the manager whom we were told was not available. Any hotel that decides when to turn on its a.c.system based on a calendar and not a thermometer or the well-being and comfort of its guests is NOT the place you want to stay!
