Peaceful Cottage in Rural North Devon, near the Ocean

The Shippen is a cosy but very spacious detached barn conversion in a peaceful rural location near Hartland, North Devon within easy reach of Hartland Quay, and other local beaches.The cottage is down a private lane away from the main road, within the grounds of a smallholding. There are 2 spacious bedrooms, one on the ground floor and one upstairs. There is a fifth bed suitable for a child or teenager in the upstairs lobby. Each bedroom has its own bathroom. There is a large open plan living/dining room with a wood burner, and a conservatory which leads out on to the lawn and patio and has views over fields and through woodland. The wood burner and heating mean the accommodation is ideal for any time of year. Well behaved dogs are welcome but please bear in mind that our chickens, ducks and geese are free range on the property.
Housing Crisis in the South West:
The Shippen only has planning consent as holiday accommodation so by booking it you are not preventing a local family from having a home to rent.

Lovely cottage
Had a lovely relaxing week here, plenty of space. Everything you could.possibly need. Owner extremely welcoming and helpful. Although property is remote and is surrounded by lovey countryside, it is fairly central to many interesting and beautiful places to visit.

A quiet, comfortable, spacious and well equipped barn conversion with all that is needed for a restful holiday. Plenty of space for small children to run around, both indoors and outdoors. The area is a cliff walkers paradise but parking car parking is sometimes quite limited. Penny, the owner, was always about to give advice and the eggs were super fresh.

A great stay in a beautiful, comfy, home!
We loved our stay with Penny! The home had all the things we needed to be comfy and was really beautiful. The wood stove was great (might have contributed to some dust on the floor, but really a tiny issue)! We had intended to hike a lot but were rained out; no matter as we spent a lot of time just relaxing in this great house. Penny is also an incredible host. Very communicative and kind. She had to check on something in the house while we were out and was incredibly covid-safe, airing out the house in-between, wiping things down, etc.... We really appreciate that. Highly recommend staying with Penny!

We had a lovely week in this beautiful, peaceful place tucked away in the countryside and not far from the incredible Hartland coast. The house is comfortable, everything we wanted, and is full of special touches, artworks, books etc. Our host Penny was so welcoming and friendly to us throughout our stay. We hope to return!

Quiet location, ideal for relaxing break. Penny and her husband made us feel very welcome .
Very spacious cottage, ideal for the four of us and could easily accommodate 6. Facilities couldn't be faulted. Ideal resting place to explore the local attractions, coastline and within easy reach of Devon and Cornwall's AONB. Amazing coastline views for day trips. We would definitely stay at Penny's again when next visiting such a lovely and hospitable part of the country with it's own rich cultural history.

Generous cottage in a secluded location near to both Devon & Cornwall places of interest
Lovely, spacious cottage, generous with both facilities and little touches (plenty of tea bags for example) the weather wasn’t kind to us, but we used it as an excuse to enjoy the log burner. Penny was very friendly and helpful and we had a lovely time, already thinking about coming back.

Lovely warm cosy cottage away from it all.

Wonderful few days in perfect cottage
We had a wonderful few days at The Shippen. So much so that we actually extended our stay. Penny and her husband are friendly, so helpful and were really patient and understanding with us. We felt so welcome. Thee cottage is a very generous size with two bathrooms, two bedrooms and room for a fifth person or child. But despite its size, it is so cosy. We had an amazing first holiday with our 7 month old baby. Penny and The Shippen took all our stresses away.

What a lovely place for a relaxing break! The cottage had everything we needed and more, and was clean and cosy. Such a peaceful location, but within easy reach of many lovely walks/attractions. Penny greeted us to show us around and make sure we were comfortable, and we were welcomed with eggs and cake - delicious. We don’t normally revisit the same place twice, but I have a feeling we will make and exception here and return. Thanks for a lovely break.

Excellent cottage absolutely everything you need, very comfortable beds for a good sleep and a nice gesture of cake and eggs on arrival. Penny on hand if you need to ask anything and doesn't intrude on your holiday at all. Lovely surroundings and plenty of interesting places to visit .

Absolutely perfect from start to finish
It was very clean, well equipped,comfortable,warm and relaxing. Penny had very kindly got us a cake and some eggs on arrival which was a lovely touch and her welcome was just right, how to contact her if needed but also gave us space to enjoy the cottage. I would recommend this cottage 100% it was just perfect.

Lovely Cottage
We have just had a wonderful four night stay in ‘The Shippen’. A lovely welcome from Penny. The location was wonderful if you are looking for a place to get away from it all. The woodland in the grounds attracts a lot of birds, which you hear at all times during daylight hours. The cottage was neat and tidy but it was evident that pets had been there. Just a few dog hairs about, but nothing serious. Despite this, the cottage was lovely. The WiFi was good. Penny was lovely. It provided us with a great place to rest and relax. It is definitely a cottage we would love to rent again, but for longer next time.

Lovely cottage to explore North Devon coast
The cottage was comfortableft, well kitted out with everything you neef for a long or short stay. The peaceful and beautiful surroundings were fabulous to wake up to and in the evenings after a day out. . Penny the host was friendly yet unobtrusive and we very much enjoyed the local eggs and lemon drizzle cake left for us. A great Base to explore the north Devon coast.

Peaceful stay in a lovely corner of Devon
A comfortable house in a very quiet location, down a track off a country lane. It is spacious and well equipped, especially the kitchen. The woodburning stove and conservatory are great if the weather is cool or wet. Lots of local information in the house and Penny is on hand for further recommendations. This is an ideal spot for walking, close to the southwest coast path but also near surfing beaches, swimming and local towns.

Relaxing and quiet stay
Very well equipped cottage. Very comfortable stay. Good location for cliff top walks. Lots of birds to spot on the coast and at the cottage. Easy access to local amenities. Hartland village has good eateries and only 3 mins away. Owner’s house is nearby and very welcoming. Definitely thinking of returning sometime.
