Tired grand hotel

Posted Jul 10, 2014
Beautiful but tired hotel, centrally located in Charlezton. Food and wonderful piano bar are the best parts as rooms while fairly large are in need of updating. Staff not well trained, halls aren't air conditioned and rooms have trouble staying cool. Wouldn't upgrade us to higher floors and pet fee is per day, not per stay as better hotels. Felt like the feeling was Expedia guest are cheap.

The hotel is in a great location and is comfortable, but feels a little old and not quite a four star experience.

Gorgeous hotel in downtown

Posted Jul 7, 2014
Pros: Decor was beautiful.
Cons: The pool was very crowded- 4th of July weekend- we couldn't find a spot to sit. Hot tub was grimy.
Hotel in a great spot downtown- right near The Market, shops on King Street, and walking distance to many restaurants and the Ft. Sumter Ferry. Room was immaculate, sheets and bed were so comfortable and housekeeping turned down the room each evening.

Nice hotel rooms need updated

Posted Jun 25, 2014
Cons: Rooms
The entrance and lobby to the hotel is beautiful with shopping and great restaurants. However our room was in need of updates. The holes in the shower tile and outdated bathroom fixtures were not what you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. There was also lots of dust around fixtures in the living area. Friendly staff and overall nice visit

Refurbished Floor

Posted Jun 23, 2014
We stayed for 4 nights early June and were given a standard room on floor 6 which had recently been refurbished. The designer had clearly gone for looks over practicality. The wardrobe doors could only be opened in a certain sequence, the bathroom bowl and surface were too high and made washing uncomfortable and the washing bowl was too far away from the surface edge which meant stretching each time. There were no in room tea/coffee facilities Overall however the hotel is really very good with excellent public facilities and staff who care about your experience. Great restaurants and an excellent location.

Elegance, comfort, history. Bring lots of money.

Pros: The personnel friendly & helpful, the rooms were very nice and extremely comfortable beds.
Cons: It would have been nice to have a little tv somewhere in the bar area...particularly since the Belmont was running the 3rd jewel of the triple crown.
Location: High end shopping or marketplace, 3 different exits - everything nearby, eating, shopping, and places for a drink, theatre all nearby
People genuine, considerable history, knowledgeable cab drivers and rickshaw drivers. The Carolina Belle gave a nice little tour that wasn't crowded. Spoleto festival was ongoing and We were fortunate enough to be there for the anniversary of D Day, met some WWII veterans, toured the battleship Laffey and aircraft carrier the Yorktown which i highly recommend. There was also a little area set aside to replicate how it was to be stationed in a Vietnam camp. My husband is a Vietnam veteran. We walked the Battery and toured the Calhoun house, which wasn't what i expected of a mansion - it was more like horded antiques - I would have preferred to see something where you can appreciate the beauty without every bit of space taken with antiques and art you could never admire in the time you have. Walking the streets where the mansion line the streets & are beautiful, lots of restaurants with a variety to please anyone. Next time, i'd take the carriage ride and skip the Calhoun Mansion, and also go to the Plantations. High Cotton has a nice brunch with Jazz and near the hotel The Pavilion has a nice little restaurant/bar/pool on top which was fun. The Belmond Charleston Place is just plain beautiful, a bit pricey dining and drinks. However, there are lots of options including bed and breakfasts that looked wonderful, and less costly. Again, everyone was so cordial, and there is just so much to see that we will return but with a car!
