Fish Market Tours

Split - Middle Dalmatia showing marine life and markets
Choose one or more items to build your trip:
See the weird and wonderful creatures which inhabit Croatia’s Adriatic Sea at this long-standing fish market housed within a charming old building.

The fish market in Split Old Town will certainly awaken your senses. Amid a hubbub of noise, where fishermen loudly hawk their latest catches, the sights and smells are an authentic experience. Creatures from the deep in every color, shape and size are on display on the many stalls. Venture down to the fish market to meet the fishermen, pick up some fresh fish or seafood for dinner and enjoy a unique cultural experience.

Known as Peskarija in Croatian, the fish market is located in the Old Town, just around the corner from Marmontova Street. As you approach, listen for the noisy chatter of the fishermen and smell the unmistakable scent of the ocean that is carried on the air. Enter the ornate market building where limestone counters are covered with all kinds of water-dwelling animals, from tuna to octopus. The building is over 120 years old and built in the Secession style.

Listen to the light-hearted talk of the fishermen as they try and sell their prized catches. Even if you don’t speak Croatian, their laughter and energy are infectious. Wander past the stalls and stop to look at weird and wonderful fish and seafood. Find mackerel, sardines and anchovies as well as prawns, squid and lobster.

Once you have chosen what you want to buy, agree on a price with the seller. Don’t take it home whole, however. Save yourself the mess and time of gutting and preparing the fish by getting it expertly filleted for you here at the market. For the very best choice of produce, get to the market early in the morning, although you can also grab some excellent bargains in the afternoon when the fishermen are closing up.

The fish market is one of the most important cultural institutions in Split’s Old Town, and the large, distinctive building is easy to find. Be sure to get there in good time, as the market closes in the early afternoon.
