About this property

Entire place

You'll have the entire home to yourself and will only share it with other guests in your party.

Rustic Beach Retreat — 100 Yards from Beach— Dogs Welcome!

You can hear the ocean from this excellent island location that's just a 100 yard walk down a dead-end street that ends at the beach! The entire ground floor of the home is where you’ll be. The space is cool as an oasis with tiled floors offset by the warmth of vintage California redwood paneling and exposed brick walls. It's not updated and decked out with all the latest gadgets or appliances and is very simplistic, rustic, and kind of quirky. To offset what it’s lacking, it does have a great beach-y vibe and a primo location. *NOTE: There is no washer /dryer. You will only have access to the ground floor of house.
The space is suitable for 2 people, or 3 if the third person wants to sleep on a small couch, or you're welcome to bring a blow-up mattress – there is ample room for one. (see photos). It has an open floor plan with a queen bed, small primitive kitchen with an adjacent little sunny sitting room, and a windowless bathroom with a tiled shower and a large cedar lined closet area to store your bags.

**Guests do not have access to AC/Heat controls. This house is equipped with a geo-thermal unit. If you desire a certain temp, please let us know and we will adjust the thermostat to your desire. However being an older home located in a subtropical climate, it’s never going to be 65 degrees inside during the summer months.
The property was once a huge sand dune. It is very shady with lots of live oaks and palm trees and has wild, unkempt vegetation everywhere – there is no manicured lawn here. (FYI: this is what this end of Isle of Palms looked like before it was developed with all the houses and their unnatural manicured lawns). We have chosen to have a sustainable yard – no watering required – and provide an ecological oasis for native plants and animals. If you're lucky, you will see the small herd of white tail deer that call a corner of the yard home. PLEASE NOTE: We are surrounded by lots of trees and unkempt vegetation; therefore, there is not a lot of natural light on the ground floor, so it may be too dark inside for some people’s taste. We have ample lighting and lamps throughout to compensate for the lack of natural light coming through the windows and doors. However, this can be beneficial especially during the hot summer months after being out on the beach all day.
So, if what you’re looking for is a place with all the bells and whistles of a newly renovated home or an airy light-filled modern beach house with all the latest appliances and perks, please look elsewhere – you’re not going to be happy here. We want our guests to be happy and comfortable during their stay and enjoy their time in our ocean playground.
**FYI: there is no dishwasher. And the washer/dryer in the apartment do not work. If you need to do laundry, there is an IOP Laundromat about 2.5 miles away in the Harris Teeter shopping center.

PETS: We do accept friendly, housebroken dogs only – Limit Two (2) Dogs – preferably smaller dogs, but will accept large dogs depending on breed. ALL DOGS MUST BE PRE-APPROVED PRIOR TO BOOKING. We charge a pet fee of $20 per dog. This fee is included in your quote. Also, when outside, your dog will have to be on a leash and all pet waste will have to be picked up and disposed in the trash can outside by the curb. We do not accept cats.
City of Isle of Palms Dog Rules: Dogs can run off-leash on the beach every day from 5a.m. to 9a.m., after that, they must be leashed at all times.
If you would like more info, please inquire via email and I’ll be happy to answer any of your questions before you book. Cristina

Wonderful Host
Great communication with host. If you enjoy unique places…. This is the place for you! From the bright red sink to the lack of right angles, it will peak your curiosity!! High quality towels, stocked shower needs, beach chairs & towels, and comfortable bed made this stay complete. Easy walk to the beach too!

This “Rustic” retreat needs a lot of updating! It could be a beautiful place if it was taken care of properly. The outside was very overgrown and the inside smelled. Also, beware if you are on the larger side, because you will not be able to get into the shower! Shower opening was only about 18 inches!!!!!

A Little Break
We enjoyed our stay very much! The property description was accurate though we cook and I’ll tell you what, pots and pans were sparse! One very small pot with lid, one small very worn Teflon skillet with no lid and one larger wok like skillet with no lid were what was available. There was one 5x7 cutting board and no hot mitts. There was some tea and olive oil and salt and pepper. If we come back sometime I’ll bring some cooking gear. Great location and the space was a comfortable temperature.

Awesome Location
The property was exactly as described. My grandson and I had so much fun here. I had siblings visit while I was there and there were plenty of places to sit comfortably. The outdoor area was just amazing for us. The architecture was just great. We really liked exploring and everyone wanted to look inside and see every nook. The beach was also amazing. We found shark teeth, shells, rocks and sand dollars galore. I hope to return someday with my husband.

Accurate Description on IOP where we wanted to be...
This Rustic Beach Retreat location on IOP was exactly what we wanted! We Read and Reread the absolute narrative description of this "very simplistic, rustic, and kind of quirky" home. The absolute description says it all, as the explanation is indeed absolutely accurate. To offset what it’s lacking, it does have a "great beach-y vibe and a primo location". As stated: the "cottage" "may be too dark inside for some people’s taste", however for us this simplistic, rustic & quirky abode was a reprieve from ALL of the other homes that are exactly alike! Great location and where we not only wanted to be, BUT where we needed to be! Thanks for letting us stay!

2 minute walk to the beach and only 25 minutes to Downtown Charleston
“Apartment” is the basement of an older house in a very nice area. Super close to the beach and nice and quiet. Outside area needs some fixing up but overall the property was unique in a good way. Close to restaurants and downtown Charleston is not far at all.

Interesting
The layout is hodge-podge but the space is very homey. Bed was comfortable. Small smart TV but WiFi worked well. About a 150 yard walk to the beach which was pretty secluded. Mosquitos were vicious. The coffee pot was small as was the microwave. A few upgrades could make this space awesome --- a stove for starters. There were a few bugs crawling around. Again, this was an interesting accommodation and I'd say the VRBO description was pretty accurate.

rustic amidst the Gatsbys
The owner very accurately describes the property as rustic. I'm sure the neighbors are very upset with the state of the yard - wild, jungle-like vs. manicured lawns all around. The beach is just a short walk and is absolutely beautiful. We saw the moon rising and the sun rising over the ocean. We saw some type of glowing orb "swim" by in the surf near us one night, just after spotting a shooting star. The house itself is dark. The internet is very slow (if you care). We could not find the outside hose to wash off sand when we came in from the beach. The driveway is a little difficult to manipulate. There were some cob webs. The shower is dark, but the water pressure excellent. The bed is very comfortable. It's all about what you want in a place at the beach. We would have stayed a few more days had it been available.

Perfect for what we needed.
Let me start by saying you get what you pay for. The price was right, and all we needed was somewhere ro lay our head at night, and somewhere to shower. We text the property manager a couple hours before we got there asking her to set the temp where we wanted it, and she answered almost immediately letting us know she would do it. We had a little issue with the AC, but she came to look at it the same day. We really didn't spend much time there, but like I said it was exactly what we needed. Was it the most beautiful house on the block? No, but we also weren't teying to spend $10k to stay by the beach! We also had no issues with the hot water!

Great location but property needs a clean up
The location was great as it was a short walk to the beach. This is advertised as "rustic" which is true, however there is a difference between "rustic" and old and unfinished. The person living upstairs needs to clean up the property, it was junky. There is a definite smell each time you walk in, old and musty and damp. There is no dishwasher or even a stove, only a toaster oven. A lot of this property is unfinished and just plain odd. There was not even a normal door handle on the outside to close the door, just a broken piece of wood. Each time the person living above flushed the toilet, it is right over the bed and sounds like a lot of water- like a heavy rain storm. The bed was uncomfortable and the pillows were old and flat. This property needs some updating and upgrades for sure. These photos are probably several years old. It was a lower price than others in the area and it is a great location but I would not recommend staying here.

OBX Experience
My Daughter is a huge Outer Banks fan. We decided to tour all of the location filming hot spots. We wanted the location of this house on IOP because of the beach access. It was a perfect location and not far from all the things we wanted to do. The home was described perfectly. The overgrown trees did not bother us at all. It provides privacy for the home. There is no sign of a broken down car that some people have stated on there reports. We found the bed to be comfortable and the internet and A/C just fine. It was very comfortable. We did not cook on this trip just had breakfast items at the house. If you want to cook you will need to do the minimum as there are only a few pots and pans. I wanted to eat out and take in all the seafood one could handle on a beach trip. I was pleasantly surprised that they had some coffee, sugar, creamer and hot tea for use. The towels were nice and soft. The home also provided shampoo and conditioner and beach towels. Entry into the home was easy. This house is ecletic and not your typical beachhouse with white walls and light and airy. Its dark and cozy and a very relaxed vibe. We felt as if we had the place to ourselves, we never ran into the owners even though they live upstairs. this trip Over all this was a hit for my teenage daughter and myself. We would stay again.

Value
For the rental fee this property was worth the cost. It has drawbacks in ease of access and temperature control that were not adequate explained on the listing. The temperature is controlled in the upstairs unit but the listing does not tell you that and on the first night when I realized I just could not find the thermostat, I asked about it via email but it was too late so the response was the next morning. Also, there was no explanation as to how to control the fan. The PM was very helpful and responsive, which was a huge plus. The unit was well kept and comfortable once the temperature and ceiling fan was under control. Bottom line for me is that for IOP you get a very nice place in a good location for a very reasonable price.

The house was once a prime jewel. Surrounded by new micmannsions it is dark and hidden.
The apt was good for our use the kitchen needs better pot and silverware. Very musty next to the bed. Lots of cat food cans outside and unkept outside. One door in by the kitchen did not lock so we tied a rope between it and the other door. The shower has channel locks for a switch. Very close to the beach and quiet we enjoyed our time next time we will take our camping grill. Good for pets and low key activity.
