Overall, we had a pleasant stay at Shimoda Prince Hotel. This huge building is located right on one of the most beautiful beaches in Honshu. The beach itself is clean, quiet and not overpacked even at the highest season due to its remote location. The obvious downside is that this hotels is far from everything with very few dining options. Those that are available at the hotel are exorbitantly priced! Back to the hotel itself, it is a relatively old building with dated design that turns its hallways into a greenhouse. All end up almost 10C warmer than rooms, while the in-room A/C struggled greatly. When set to 22C, the room never reached below 24.3C and most times it was hotter than that. Rooms were extremely spacious by any standard with very comfortable bedding. The provided Yukatas were light and clean to sleep with. There a small working safe but this is a remote hotel and never felt that it would be needed. The bathroom left the most to be desired as its was quite dated and didn't work as smoothly as other hotels in Japan. It did provide a very wide selection of useful amenities though! We have to point out that the staff here was very attentive and friendly. Everything was processed in a timely matter. They also spoke more English than in most places which greatly helped

The only thing I loved about the property was the access to shirahama beach. Rooms are outdated, and for the price we payed i will probably not stay here again.

With our 2.5 year-old toddler, we stayed at this vintage hotel whose best asset was its stunning beachfront. Our initial room on the first floor was rather worn and not well-maintained, which concerned us. However, the front desk staff promptly moved us to a much better room. Their responsiveness was truly appreciated. Despite the room issue, the hotel’s amazing beach made our stay pleasant. With its fantastic location and captivating views, a bit of renovation could certainly elevate the experience for future guests.

The hotel is a little old but was clean and nice. He view was amazing and staying in a room with a terrace was a great choice. The downside to this location were food and transportation. The public bus was infrequent and there were only a few limited free shuttles to the train station. Taxis from the station were about ¥2,500. The hotel has limited food options as well. The breakfast buffet was nice but a bit overpriced for what was on offer. There was nothing at the hotel for lunch and dinner had only three options. You also had to reserve dinner and breakfast so could not be spontaneous. This location probably works better for people with a car.

Pool not available until mid-July
We stayed during the last week of June. It was already over 30 degrees but the beach was disappointing because it was low-tide during the daytime and extremely rocky. The hotel has a pool but it won’t be available until mid-July. What a waste of a facility that could’ve been enjoyed by the guest. The hotel ended up only as a place to sleep as there are no other things you can enjoy at the hotel unless you come in during peak (crowded) season.

I think this place is awesome, although when staff helps with stuff seems a big intrusive looking at your luggage. They are watching to see what you bring rather than just helping you bring it in. The other thing is no microwave at all. Other than that great place.

Extremely outdated, bugs, and no A/C (air con)
I stayed here in late April 2021. The hotel is in a great location with it's own private beach. The hotel staff was also very professional and kind. However, that's where the pros of this hotel end. The hotel is extremely old and outdated. Many of the rooms say "renewal" room. Well, that renewal must have been 25 years ago. The room is outdated, smells old, and there are almost no wall sockets to charge your phone or computer. The only socket we could find is at the desk, but that will only charge one phone and it's not reachable from the bed. I believe the worst part is that we were both sweating in the room. The hotel is so old that they don't have individual A/C units in each room. The hotel controls if the air is hot or cold. It was 22C+ the weekend we were there, that combined with a south facing room and sunlight all day, we were SO HOT. The staff said sorry, nothing we can do. The hotel was currently set up to still use heat. They have no fans and opening the balcony doors isn't an option because there are no screens. Yes, the hotel also has NO screens on the sliding doors. So bugs will poor in as soon as you leave the door open. Finally, there was one cockroach in the room and spotted two in the hallways. We stayed on the 1st floor for the rooms with the terrace outside, but that was a bad idea due to the cockroaches.

Get the ocean facing balcony room and you will not be disappointed with your stay. The absolute best part about this hotel is the beach right down stairs. Sushi restaurant is really good too. Staff are nice and courteous. This place needs, needs, needs to update their bathrooms. At least get a nice shower head for your guests. Jeez. Overall, I would stay here again. Oh, and the dinner course at the main restaurant is meh.

Overall was good, but the receptionists weren’t good at what they do. Greetings was more like an inspection and they forgot to say thank you at checkout time. We didn’t use the room service during our stay but they didn’t give us the eco coupons as promised. Both breakfast & dinner were not delicious. Their restaurant charged like a hotel but didn’t have a good quality meal like a hotel.

The room we stayed in had an incredible view of the ocean and we enjoyed the private beach area in front of the hotel. The staff was helpful but did not speak much Japanese. The rooms was large and clean with a very small bathroom. Overall, the hotel is very outdated and could use some repair. The pool area is not very nice at the hotel. The breakfast was very pricey but good.

Great location but in need of facelift
This hotel is in a great spot, a couple of kms from Shimoda and right on the beach. Room was fine with good views over ocean. However as with many beach side properties it shows the wear and tear of the marine conditions. Limited dining options, but the sushi restaurant was very good.

It was a very long drive to the hotel from narita and we had to pay about 6,000 yen in toll. However, it was a very spectacular beach front property. The hotel itself was really very dated and old in decor. The property does need upgrades. The public bath was fabulous with views of the ocean. Simply incredible.

Beautiful views but terribly setup. The room was hot even with the A/c completely turned down. A/c vent filters were also filthy and look to have never been cleaned. Beds were hard as a rock but I'm not complaining about that. First floor access is a long walk down a hallway then on an elevator. Don't try the public spa if you have tattoos because it's not allowed. Otherwise it's a decent hotel. Again, the views are amazing!
