Take some time for quiet reflection amid the traditional Japanese landscaping at these ornate grounds in the northern part of Belo Horizonte’s city center.

Enjoy a break from the fast pace of city life in Belo Horizonte by stopping in at the Japanese Garden. This beautifully manicured green space is part of the larger botanical garden and the city zoo. Come here to see how many different species of plants and trees you can spot, take a gentle walk or simply relax in the shade of a flowering cherry blossom tree.

Designed by respected Japanese landscape architect Haruho Ieda, this traditional garden is home to native Japanese plants such as eastern pine trees, cherry trees, azaleas and bamboo. This serene and verdant setting provides a welcome respite from the bustle of the city streets. Stroll over the decorative bridges spanning ponds where golden carp drift beneath the surface of the water. Look for the traditional Japanese gate and teahouse. Let the soft, bubbling sound of miniature waterfalls soothe you as you seek out the perfect place to relax among the sculptures.

The Japanese Garden is conveniently located close to some of Belo Horizonte’s most interesting attractions. Get additional appreciation of nature at the zoo to the north and the botanical gardens to the south. Head directly to the northeast and you will find the scenic Lagoa da Pampulha, a manmade lake that is one of the city’s most interesting spots. This is the site of Oscar Niemeyer’s famous Pampulha Modern Ensemble, a complex of mid-century buildings that includes some of the iconic Brazilian architect’s best-known work. Visit Belo Horizonte’s most recognizable structures at this UNESCO site, including the Casa do Baile and the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Come to the Japanese Garden early in the morning to enjoy it at its most peaceful. The garden is open Tuesdays through Sundays during general business hours. Make sure you bring a camera, a picnic blanket and something for reading or quiet relaxation.
