A night in the Old Winter Palace

Posted Jul 18, 2014
Pros: The grandeur - there is nothing to dislike about the hotel
Cons: Nothing
Location: The hotel is a short walk from the Luxor temple, the souk and Calesh or taxi drive to Karnak temple. The views of the Nile are truly spectacular.
We stayed in the Old Winter Palace just for one night at the end of trip to Luxor - my wife had been working on an excavation on the West Bank so we were staying over that side. Staying in the Old Winter Palace with its grandeur of bygone times was the perfect ending to the trip - especially for my wife - living the life of an Egyptologist like Howard Carter! The Nile facing room was beautiful - watching the sun setting over the Theban Hills - truly magical! We look forward to coming back and staying for longer - as it is a special hotel, beautiful gardens, elegant surroundings and wonderful staff. The perfect hotel in every sense!

Great hotel with fantastic pool

Posted Apr 15, 2014
Pros: The rooms were clean and a great size. The pool is just fantastic with plenty of towels, very comfortable sun lounges and a calm, tranquil atmosphere.
Cons: The water temperature in the shower could be a little erratic at times!
Location: Luxor is a very busy city with plenty of sights and restaurants to visit.
Myself and my boyfriend just spent a week at the Pavillon Winter Luxor and loved it! The staff were very helpful and friendly- anything we needed they went out of their way to get for us. The pool is fantastic and again the staff were friendly and very accommodating. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Luxor, as it is a calm oasis away from all the mad hustle and bustle of Luxor!

Great Hotel

Posted Feb 4, 2014
I had a great time at the hotel, It is a great location, very close to Luxor Temple and other sightseeing's, I was upgraded to the Winter Palace, which was a full Nile View room, which actually made our vacation much better. The Breakfast was not good at all, they didn't have variety in the buffet, and it was the same thing everyday. Overall it was a great holiday with my family.

A great break in the Pavillion

Posted Dec 28, 2013
We booked in for two nights of indulgence during our 3 week stay in a flat on the West Bank. The facilities were well maintained and the meals were excellent even though the number of guests was quite small. The breakfast was a standard buffet with the mix of Egyptian, European pastries, breakfast cereal and hot breakfast including sausages, omelettes tomatoes and beans. The set lunch at the poolside restaurant was very nice but we were the only guests in the 1886 restaurant for our celebration dinner which was also excellent. We visited later for the high tea which was also excellent (although the Egyptians had made muffins instead of scones) and the range of sweet and savory treats was excellent. The gardens ere beautiful and quiet and an excellent escape from the noise and activity of the city. The back gate leads directly onto TV street allowing quick access to a range of shops. There are also two banks with ATMs just outside the front door. The Winter Palace is very close to Luxor Temple and the tourist shops of the souk. It is also vey close to the public ferry to the West bank ( only 1 Egyptian pound for tourists), and there is always transport outside - but you may want go walk away from the front of the hotel to find a better price for taxis or caleshes.

Winter of Discontent

Posted Dec 11, 2013 on Hotels.com
Excellent location. Winter Pavillion Wing now looking tired. Mini-bar never topped up. Flies around poolside very annoying. Staff around poolside spending more time playing 'spin the tray' and less time attending to guests. Surprised this hotel does not offer complementary water in the room. After checking out and getting their taxi to the airport they called the driving to advise that I had not paid for two bottles of water and two cans of sprite taken from the minibar and wanted me to pay the driver. I did not pay as they already had my cc details. Will not be going back.

Beautiful gardens and lovely people. The staff are friendly, non-invasive, and very helpful with arranging taxis and other necessities. The entire experience is a welcome respite.

An historic monument as well as a wonderful hotel

Posted Oct 10, 2012
Location: Unbeatable - overlooks the Nile, with the tombs and temples of the West Bank clearly visible.
We stay at the hotel's Garden Pavilion regularly, but on this occasion were delighted to be upgraded to the historic main building in a Nile-view room (but would have been equally delighted with a view over what must be one of the most attractive hotel gardens in the world - the hotel itself is great, but the gardens always tip the balance in its favour). We have always found the staff charming and helpful, who greet us as old friends when ever we return. The main building still oozes charm and is clearly haunted by the ghosts of the many distinguished people who have stayed there in the past - the foyer is the place where Howard Carter, discoverer of Tutankhamun, spent much time in his latter years. It is difficult to praise the Winter Palace too highly.
