Nice Riad in Medina

Posted May 8, 2014
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Angsana. We stayed at the Tivaline Riad which is one out of the 6 in the collection but only steps away from the main Si Said Riad where the reception was located and breakfast was served. It was beautiful and I really appreciated the decor and atmosphere. We had a room on the main floor in front of a beautiful fountain which was large and comfortable. The Moroccan restaurant at the hotel was also excellent and the breakfast was very nice in the beautiful courtyard. The location was great, about 5 mins walk to the main Jemaa El Fna square. The only unpleasant experience was upon initial arrival...because of the small winding streets in the Medina, the Riad would be difficult to locate. The taxi dropped us off at the main lot/square closest to the Riad where a guy offered to show us the way and walked us to the Riad only steps away. We were happy to give a tip for his help but upon arrival found that he had a couple "friends" of his walk with us. One of his friends demanded that we give him 100 durhams which we refused but he wouldn't leave us alone. The security guard was not helpful at all and I was surprised since he was "security" as this appears to be a common situation. Other than this incident, all other staff were very nice and helpful during our stay. They even gave us a courtesy room after checkout before we had to leave for airport due to late flight. We would recommend stay at this Riad as overall very pleasant!

Perfect Haven

Posted May 7, 2014
Pros: Location is great, less than 10 minutes stroll to the main square. The atmosphere and feel of the Riad makes it a very relaxing place to be.
Cons: Nothing, it was great.
Location: Everything in the medina is walking distance.
We booked the royal suite as a treat (which was not much more expensive than the regular rooms) and it was larger than my London flat. The traditional décor was beautiful and it was a real treat to stay there. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and the Riad was perfect for a short city break to Marrakesh. The rooms do not have a TV (this is deliberate to add to the traditional feel) and internet is sketchy unless you are in the main areas, however, it was great to put down the blackberry and have a valid reason not to be contactable 24/7. The roof top sun terrace and plunge pool / Jacuzzi is perfect for afternoon sundowners after a busy day sightseeing.

Definitely NOT 5 Star

Posted May 7, 2014
Pros: We only liked the Moroccan staff. The guys who actually work hard.
Cons: Water heaters could be bigger, breakfast could be less stale, and understanding and solving customer complaints could be improved overall.
Location: This is in the medina off jemaa el fnaa square. You can't drive to the riad, but once you're in, the square has plenty of food and entertainment.
My parents and I stayed here on a recent trip to Morocco and it was a nightmare! Our transfer with luggage took several hours winding through the medina. We had 2 porters fighting over who was going to move our things and a bell boy who kept us waiting while he played hooky from work. Finally, they dropped us off at the wrong location (there are 5 riads in this "collection") with no hotel staff to meet us, and both porters demanding money from us. After complaining that we had lost an entire morning to this nonsense, we were shown to our rooms and compensation was alluded to. When it was time to unpack, I moved an unassuming bowl out of the way, only to find it had been filled with perfume oil. I say "had been" because said perfume oil was now all over my luggage, staining and scenting everything I own. I wanted to call someone, but there are no phones or TVs in the room. We managed to find someone who told us the hotel would take care of the laundry. I then took my heavily perfumed self to the free dinner they offered us (for the day's troubles), but it was more trouble to eat the terrible food. Then it was time to take a shower, which turned cold after 10 minutes because the water heater is the size of a carryon. At checkout, the manager told us they did us a favor by doing more laundry than what had been spilled on, and they were going to overlook it. Thanks. I'll overlook the fact that I had to wear the same clothes for 2 days because my clean clothes reeked!

Terribly overpriced. Three star quality.

Posted Apr 25, 2014
Pros: Suite was beautiful and the manager was very gracious, sending wine and roses to our room after we reported our anger with the arrival procedure.
Cons: A sign for the hotel in the car park where taxis drop you off could go a long way!
Location: Good location - right in the heart of the medina.
The hotel room was beautiful and comfortable (we had a suite), but the overall quality of the hotel was disappointing. Upon being dropped off by a taxi close to Angsana, two locals descended on the taxi, harassed us, and insisted on showing us to the Angasana reception, which is difficult to locate (the hotel could easily put a sign up in the square to guide guests but it hasn't). Upon arrival the men demanded payment. Shockingly, the two Angsana receptionists, including a security guard, pushed us to pay them. Similarly frustration ensued when trying to take a taxi that the hotel had arranged later on in the visit Expedia did not warn us that there would be a hotel issued "stay tax" (in addition to a local government tax) as well as an expensive "service charge" for staying at the hotel. We were appalled at the service charge, particularly given how unhelpful and disappointing the staff were. The breakfast was very poor quality - not what you would expect from a five star hotel. Our second day the hot water stopped working in the bathroom, but we were able to get it fixed the third day. I also booked an spa appointment 48 hours in advance only to be told the day of that I had been bumped for a couple that wanted to use the massage room in my riad instead - I was appalled! They said I could pay for a massage at another Riad about 20 minutes away. Given the extra charges and what was certainly not five star treatment we were very disappointed with our stay!

A quiet oasis in the bustle of the Medina

Posted Apr 22, 2014
Pros: The quality of service was outstanding: the staff could not have been more attentive, without being intrusive.
Cons: Nothing: an ideal location for an exotic city break.
Location: Convenient for palaces, souks and main square, and taxi stand to take you anywhere further.
This hotel proved to be an excellent base for walking in and around Marrakech, close to three major palaces, the souks and the main square. The facilities were excellent in all respects.

Excellent Riad in Heart of the Medina

Posted Mar 20, 2014 on Hotels.com
One thing you have to accept about staying in the Medina is that it is quite likely that the taxi won't get you to the door! This riad is no different except that at least you are dropped off at a car park. The usual luggage haulers will be there on a shot but it is legally 2 min away. Once inside out is an oasis of peace and quiet. Lots of original features give it a genuine feel. However now that the resort is made up of 6 riad so you might want to check which one you are in. We didn't get confirmation on our booking either from Hotels.com or the hotel And despite paying for a queen /king size bed were given a double bed room. It was also separate from the main reception /restaurant riad. Whilst being lovely and atmospheric we asked to be moved which the helpful staff did without any bother. I would always try to get the main riad if not only because you can get a drink brought up to the peaceful rooftop area to chill out. Breakfast was a small continental affair but lovely in the road's central area. Finally I can't complement the staff enough. They are very (genuinely) friendly and helpful, even providing me a birthday cake without anyone asking based on my passport details. I would wholeheartedly recommend.

Dear Gareth, thank you very much for recommending our riads. Disposing of 6 riads we understand that some guest might wish to be moved, which we will do with pleasure whenever possible. Your comment shows how pieceful and relaxing it is to stay on our roof tops, hence it is inspiring us to extend our bar and restaurant service in all riads. Just take the mobile we hand over to each guest upon arrival, give us a ring and we will be at your service on each roof top, your room, wherever you wish. The entire team is very pleased about your friendly words and your comment certainly brightens up our days. We really hope to welcome you soon again, maybe, who knows, for a next little birthday surprise. With our best wishes, Petra Trapp Hotel Manager

Luxury and Convenience at a great price

Posted Mar 19, 2014
We basically booked this hotel as a spur of the moment break from work and we were pleasantly surprised. We wanted somewhere close to the centre of town so we didn't have to walk mikes or take a shuttle bus (on a schedule). We also wanted to stay somewhere that was rustic and had a traditional Moroccan flavour. The Angsana Riad collection was perfect for us and the hospitality and friendliness of the staff was second to none we had previously experienced. (Hamid and Abdelrahim) made sure they have us inside tips on booking tours and haggling with taxis or traders. We were literally a 5minute meander through the Dar Si Daid souks to get the the vibrant and colourful Jemaa El Fna square. Breakfast was plentiful. We visited Ourika and the waterfall and I must say that was a great experience even though I wore inappropriate footwear (it's a bit of rock climbing to get there 2000m above sea level).
