Authentic Log Cabin 1/2 mi to Appalachian Trail/on Paint Creek/Fire pit/Fishing

Viking Mountain Lodge is an old, 2200 square foot log cabin located inside the Cherokee National Forest near the Appalachian Trail. The cabin sits high up in the Smoky Mountains about halfway between the quaint mountain town of Hot Springs, North Carolina and the historic town of Greeneville, Tennessee. The two story structure is made of rough cut hemlock logs that are hand hewn on the exterior side. With four bedrooms and two full bathrooms, VML has the ability to sleep 15 guests making it well suited for large groups or family reunions.

VML overlooks Paint Creek which runs the width of the four acre property. Whether you’re sitting on the front porch in the handmade cypress furniture, on the deck in the rocking/adirondack chairs, or inside with the windows open, you can listen to the peaceful melody from the rushing waters of Paint Creek. Our guests frequently comment that this alone is worth trip to Viking Mountain Lodge. There is a fire pit in the front yard down by the water’s edge for roasting marshmallows or keeping warm on a cool evening. You can trout fish in the creek or catch bream in the larger of the two ponds on the property.

Go for a day hike on the AT. Have a picnic on top of Camp Creek Bald. Go whitewater rafting on the French Broad River. Fly fish Big Laurel Creek. Head to historic Greeneville Tennessee and visit one of the many museums. Most of all, RELAX!

Although the cabin is rustic, it has all of the amenities of home; a large, fully stocked kitchen, washer and dryer, linens, towels, wood stove, gas fireplace, 6 Hunter ceiling fans, gas/charcoal/smoker combination grill, and even a 50” HDTV with Bose sound bar for those cold or rainy days. All of this in a spacious, clean cabin decorated with numerous Bev Doolittle prints and many pieces of antique furniture. PLEASE NOTE: The cabin does not have air conditioning. Like most homes in the area, it’s typically not needed. Also, there is no internet or cell service at the cabin. Most people find it very refreshing to unplug and spend some undistracted time with each other and with nature. Please keep these things in mind when booking.

Good Ole Boys
We were born and raised in Greeneville, and have always gone back to meet up and camp at Paint Creek. Now we are older and Paint Creek has been closing in the winter, so we decided we'd rent the lodge. It was absolutely perfect. Old, rustic, in the mountains, by the creek, and a fire pit with wood on-site. This place is awesome. We will definitely be back!

Loved it!
This property was very quiet and peaceful. Our family of 10 that stayed here loved it the kids played on the hills and by the creek from sun up to sun down. House stayed warm without using the wood burning stove. And there was plenty of space.

Excellent stay in a beautiful place.
Our whole family stayed together as we came to Greeneville for my son's wedding. This cabin was perfect for us since it kept our family together in one place. However, it was further perfect for us, because it was in good proximity to the town, and was a beautiful location for us to have some great family time. The cabin is very comfortable and had all we needed. We greatly enjoyed our stay, and love this property! Thank you very much!

Freezing in cabin with no heat
The temperature outside was 20 degrees. Only one heater worked down stairs. It was like sleeping outside. Carpet has holes. Bathroom was from the 70s, blue with rust enclosure. No internet or cell service. Only TV downstairs. The drop off from road to cabin is 2 feet so the bottom of your car scraps each time, hope your have a mufflers after stay.

Wedding by the creek
We had my daughters wedding at Viking Mountain Lodge and it was magical. The cabin and the creek made the perfect backdrop for the day and night. Paint Creek holds a special place in mine and my daughters hearts. The beds were super comfy except the upstairs twin i heard. The space accommodated our group perfectly. The neighbors across the way were dancing to our band and the other neighbor dog that i was expecting from previous reviews must have an invisible fence now. We had to go to the property line to tell him hello. Be sure to ask about what all is there for your needs. I brought extra tables and camp chairs but was happy to see some already there. The fire was amazing on the 1st cold night of the season and it was an unforgettable event. Thank you Viking Mountain Lodge.

Mountain trip
We enjoyed the place it was just what we needed to unplug and unwind. It was all family from ages 54 to 92. The only issue we had was I don’t know who is doing the cleaning but it wasn’t very clean. Cob webs everywhere the ceiling fans hadn’t been cleaned in a very long time. Since it was still warm we opened the windows and most of the window seals were clean except the one over the kitchen sink it was horrible. We all are country girls and use to a little dirt but also my mom and aunt were house cleaners for years cleaning houses on the beach and it didn’t pass there expectations at all. Not complaining just maybe check on your cleaning crew. Even the quits in the down stairs room smelled really musky.

Enjoyed our sray
We stayed at the cabin so we could hike for a couple of days in Tennessee and North Carolina. It is definitely a cabin and if you want rich snd glam this is not for you. If you are good with a rustic cabin this is it! The beds are comfortable and the place is worn a little but yes I would come back. We enjoyed our stay. The owner was very helpful with info and suggestions
