Botanical gardens and science museums are among the many attractions luring visitors to the North District of Taichung. The many cafés and restaurants here create a lively destination packed with local and international culinary delights. Explore the shopping malls and streets lined with bars and stores.
At the district’s western end is the National Museum of Natural Science, which has a Space IMAX Theater. Across the different halls, browse the exhibits on life, human cultures and the environment, among other themes. Wander through the trails of the adjacent Botanical Garden of National Museum of Natural Science and admire the exotic vegetation.
From the gardens, walk southeast for a few minutes to reach Yingcai Children's Park, which has plenty of green space for picnics and ball games. Head east to the Confucius Temple from the 1970s and enjoy the utter serenity. Nearby, you’ll find an enormous golden Buddha statue amid the cherry blossom trees of the Paochueh Temple.
Remain in this region for the Taichung Broadcasting Bureau, a former radio station constructed by the Japanese government in 1935. Notice how the hues of its windows change throughout the day reflecting shifting colors of the sky. Enter for the various temporary art exhibits held within.
Shoppers will love the fashion and food on lively Yizhong Street. Stay into the evening, when stalls are set up and the street becomes a bustling night market. Enter the Chungyo Department Store for its upscale boutiques. The street is also known for its cram schools and the elite Taichung Municipal Taichung First Senior High School. Visit Taichung Stadium to watch baseball and rock concerts.
The North District is a little north of the center of Taichung in the Taichung special municipality. It is a short drive south from Taichung International Airport on the western side of Taiwan.
