Jewelers, banks and sports shops dominate this open-air, pedestrianized high street, which has a mall with a cinema and plenty of bars and restaurants.

Visit Northumberland Street, the main shopping avenue in Newcastle with a blend of affordable boutiques and high-end stores. The iconic high street is also known for its many restaurants and cafés, providing spaces to rest between shopping sprees. Get a sense of the local culture and atmosphere with a leisurely stroll down this lively avenue.

At the northern end of the street, look for the spires and clock tower of the St. Thomas’ Newcastle church. Relax on one of the benches on this pedestrian street and admire the views of the church. Make your way south, passing banks and pharmacies on your way.

In the center of the wide street, market stalls are often set up, selling flowers, handicrafts and other wares. Stop at one of the cafés for refreshments and watch people go by through the large front windows. Go shopping for bargains in the budget retailers or stock up on ingredients for a picnic at a nearby park from one of the supermarkets.

Midway down the street is Eldon Square, a mall containing department stores and bars and restaurants serving international food. Bring your family to watch one of the latest releases in the shopping center’s cinema.

Back on the street, browse the jewelry, stationery and sports equipment in the stores. Enjoy a quick meal from one of the fast-food outlets.

At the southern side of the avenue, you’ll have an excellent view of the 19th-century Grey’s Monument, a statue of an earl standing on a tall column.

Note that while individual hours may vary, most shops open daily from morning until early evening.

Northumberland Street runs north to south between the metro stations of Haymarket and Monument. Dotted with bus stops, the street is in the center of the city and only a short walk from the Manors railway station. Explore the surrounding area to find other gems such as St. James’ Park, Leazes Park and the Theatre Royal.
