Bookended by a pair of historic fortified gates, this pedestrian bridge in the heart of Toledo is thought to date back to the 8th century.

The Puente de Alcántara is an elegant arch-style bridge in the shadow of the Castillo San Servando. It spans the River Tagus, which surrounds the historic center in a form resembling a moat. Stand in the center of the bridge and enjoy the vista of the glorious architecture surrounding it.

Arrive at the western side of the bridge and marvel at the 15th-century tower, with a Mudejar design. You’ll also see a large gate with an arch at its base. Walk through the portal to find yourself on the arched bridge. Study the reliefs portraying the shields of the Catholic Kings and spot the sculpture of San Ildefonso.

Walk along the squared tiles of the bridge and take in the views of the river. Viewing platforms jut out from each side of the structure. Spot the Alcázar of Toledo stone fortification as well as the adjacent bridges of the Ronda de Juanelo and the Puente de Azarquiel. Reach the eastern end of the passage for a closer look at the 10th-century Gate of Alcántara.

Beyond the gate, marvel at the preserved defensive fortifications of the Castillo San Servando. A set of monks and the Knights Templar are among its former inhabitants.

Think about the rich history of the bridge, which was thought to have been constructed in the 8th century and served as one of the main entry points for pilgrims. It was rebuilt in the 10th century, before being renovated several times over the centuries.

The Puente de Alcántara stretches across the Tagus River in the eastern side of the historic center of Toledo. Arrive at the Toledo railway station and walk southwest for about 10 minutes to reach the structure.

While in the area, make sure to see other nearby highlights such as the Palacio de Benacazón, the Museo de Santa Cruz and the Ruinas Convento de San Pablo.
