A free museum inside a striking-looking neoclassical building is dedicated to 20th-century and contemporary South American art.

For more than 50 years, the Rio Grande do Sul Museum of Art has been enthralling visitors with its paintings, prints and sculptures. The permanent collection of almost 3,000 pieces focuses on gaucho art of the 20th century, works inspired by the landscapes, lives and culture of the South American lowlands.

Before undertaking your art exploration, marvel at the architecture that has made the museum one of the city’s most recognizable buildings. The grandeur of this neoclassical structure with its arched windows and yellow façade stands out among the modern buildings that surround it.

See the collection of paintings by renowned gaucho painters such as Leopoldo Gotuzzo, Libindo Ferrás and Oscar Boeira. Look at pieces from the gaucho collection of engravings, some of which date back to the late 19th century. Study the collection of Brazilian paintings that encompasses work from the early 20th century to the present day and admire the creativity of contemporary painters from Latin America. The museum also has a collection of drawings, sculptures and watercolors.

As you make your way through the galleries, stop to appreciate some of the building’s architectural and design features. They include marble stairs, large stained-glass windows and coffered ceilings.

Enjoy the temporary exhibits that are held at the museum from time to time. These exhibitions come from a host of international galleries such as the Musee d’Orsay in Paris. To learn what’s on during your stay, visit the museum’s website. There, you will also find details of art classes that sometimes take place in workshop areas on the roof.

When you are feeling hungry, go to the Bistro de MARGS on the ground floor. Dine inside or on the outdoor terrace.

The Rio Grande do Sul Museum of Art is open Tuesday to Sunday and admission is free. The museum is situated in downtown Porto Alegre and is easily reached by public transport.
