The staff (manager & manageress?) were friendly and pleasant. Food was okay (I don't think there were "home cooked" signs, which is fair enough as I don't think it was). Everywhere was clean and the Bed was comfortable.
No problems at all as a place to stop for a night while in the area.
Any small gripes I might have are more about the Pecking Mill Inn as a country pub. "Free house" these days generally suggests more than one ale available, even if they're from the same brewery. Some well-heeled locals were parked in front of the bar pumps, talking loudly about the world, including some indiscreet words about the sexuality of someone they all knew. When a French family had finished eating and gone to their room, the group then talked loudly about the French - not negatively, but again it was loud and indiscreet, impolite. It's something that happens in country pubs sometimes, when they feel as if they're run by a small group of the locals, rather than for all of the paying customers.
