I needed to make a reservation for one night at very short notice and ended up staying at the Generaator. It turned out to be a lucky find. The immediate surroundings of the hotel were not great, but once inside everything was fresh and bright.The room was very clean and seemed to have been redecorated fairly recently. One of the other things I appreciated was the shower having a proper little wall at the base to prevent water from filling the rest of the bathroom. I found the bed comfortable as I prefer a firm matress. It was also great to have a smart TV that allowed me to watch one of the 24 hour news channels on YouTube. I would also like to thank the very helpful and welcoming member of staff who dealt with me and allowed me to check in earlier and helped me with a note to explain I needed to change a ticket. Personally I think this would be a particularly good place to stay if you had a flight, train or bus the next day. It is close enough to the main station and central bus station and right next to a convenient metro stop. Equally, it would also provide a convenient base in the centre of Sofia for a longer visit.

There were so many problems with this room. 1. First of all, the bed sheet was not clean, there were some stains. 2. There were spiders in the room 3. The window blind was on the floor. 4. During the stay, there were no people at the desk, so we couldn't even complain. 5. During checkout, there was a woman, who barely spoke English, so she didn't answer our questions. 6. Photos of the room are done for another room. For example, there was no window at all in our bedroom, even though there is a window in the bedroom on the photos. 7. There is an unfair price for a late (after 00:00) check-in. I mean, we paid for the whole night, but then were asked to pay 20BGN (~10 euro) on top of it. There was nobody to help us checking during the night, it was a key box, so I don't understand why there is such a fee. 8. There is a bad smell when you go to your room. 9. The location of this place is really good, though there are some hostels around and the streets are dirty.

You get charged for checking-in after midnight - the first time I was charged of this ever! They made the check-in instruction seem complicated but it's straightforward. You get to hear your neighbours and even the steps from the next room. The toilet light do not have a very smart motion sensor as it keeps turning off when you're sitting or even bending. There was even spider in the room. They will not clean your room until you tell them to. Location is pretty good though. I have to say that this is one of the worst hotels I've stayed in Europe.

For a budget hotel I was very pleased with the Generaator. The rooms were very clean. The bed was quite comfortable. It was located about a 10 minute walk straight down the street to the main tourist area. It is very close to bus and metro stops. There were two grocery stores within a 5 minute walk. It’s very close to the Women’s Market (kind of a farmers market). My room was in the back building and it was very quiet. There is a money exchange right next door as well as a pizza shop. Probably the most surprising thing about the Generaator was how good the air conditioning was. It was perhaps the best AC I’ve ever experienced in a European hotel. When I was in Sofia the temps were in the low 90’s and you have no idea how nice it was to come back to a nice cool room. Negatives- a lot of the lights on the property run on motion detectors, including the light in the bathroom. So when you are sitting on the toilet the light keeps turning off. Because there is a bus/train stop right in front of the hotel there are usually a number of people out in front of it. The main desk is only attended 10-7. If I was coming back to Sofia, I would definitely consider staying at the Generaator again.

I needed a place to stay for a night near the bus/train station and this was perfect! Helpful staff, easy check-in, safe and quiet. The room was very clean and very comfortable. I wish I could have stayed longer!

Neighborhood is not safe. There are drunk people sitting next to hotels entrance. Bed is not comfortable at all! For some reason shower and the sink are together and it is impossible to take a shower. Hotel tried to charge us extra for late check-in even though no such fee on hotels policy.

Good value for what it is
Mixed feelings about this place, but overall it turned out better than expected. The location is good, not too far of a walk to the main city centre. The staff were helpful and friendly, but I would advise anyone arriving to check your room thoroughly before taking it. The room seemed to have a lot of dust on the floor but I assumed the light was just highlighting it. I had unpacked half our stuff before I checked the bathroom properly to find a dirty toilet, bottles under the bed and skirting board hanging off the wall in multiple places (one of which revealed a large dead cockroach when I tried to push it back on to the wall! We were very lucky there was another room available that had been cleaned, as I don't think the cleaner is around much. We stayed for four nights and it was only on the very last night that we had our towels and bedsheets changed, which seemed a little pointless when we were leaving the next day. Maybe this would be better mid way through a stay? We also very nearly ran out of toilet paper, which is one thing I would expect a cleaner to quickly check on each day, and to empty the bins should they need it. Overall I think the rooms are good value for money, but think the cleaning service just needs to be a little more efficient for the arriving guests!

Great little hotel, really well located
Stayed here for two nights, either end of a trip round Bulgaria, arrived very late both times and this wasn't a problem. The man working on reception was really helpful and friendly and spoke great English. No problem to leave our luggage their. The hotel's in a great location, on a main road easy walk straight into the centre. There's a tram stop directly outside the front door and it's close to the train station and bus station - there's even a late night pizza shop a couple doors up where we got slices for 40p at 1am! The rooms are modern and clean and the WiFi is good! Bathrooms are wetrooms and our first room was pretty small with the shower over the sink, but it just added to the charm :) Would highly recommend for location, price, service and style/cleanliness of the rooms

I spent two weeks in this hotel. The staff is extremely nice and warm. You feel welcomed, and their care is sincere. What a wonderful introduction to Bulgaria. The place is clean and comfortable, hot water, AC, all new and perfct. The location is fantastic. Two mins walk from the supermarket, two big cafes nearby, and the main city center is literally within 10 mins walk. I strongly recommend this place!!

Also, your visit was during Winter with the very low temperature outside and snowing that made our open places, and yard not so cosy. Regarding breakfast, we recommend you two places that are less than 50 m. far from us where you can have a very nice breakfast. One more time apologize for your not so good experience. I absolutely loved my 11 day stay
I absolutely loved this place. I stayed for 11 nights as a solo female traveller. The place is very clean and safe. I had a complimentary upgrade to a Deluxe room with it’s own private garden which was lovely. The property is newly renovated and boasts 2 air conditioning units, a fridge and a very comfortable bed. The city centre is just a 10 min walk and there is a supermarket and a coffee shop around the corner. The hotel owner is very friendly and kind. Would definitely stay again if I returned to Sofia and highly recommend.

Misleading description
This is not actually a hotel. It’s a repurposed building where the spaces were sliced up into tiny individual rooms. The bathrooms in particular are completely horrendous. You turn on water in the sink and get the shower hose sprinkle you from the top.

Room size ample but basic - not a lot of counter space in the bathroom, combined toilet, shower & sink so everything gets wet after shower. Staff very nice & helpful, they even let me borrow an i-phone charger, I’m very thankful about that. Great location!

Comfortable stay, great location
Great stay! Excellent service. We arrived from our overnight train to Sofia early and were able to leave our luggage at reception until our room was ready. It was very cold in Sofia and the room was very well heated. Clean room, comfortable bed. Location was great, very central to both the train/bus station and bars/restaurants.

Very good value for money, clean and close city
I arrived late, they provided information on how to late checkin. The room was clean but with a strong air freshener smell. Pictures are accurate. It is close to the metro and city centre. Shops very close by. the only thing that i didn't like was the mattress which was too soft for me.
