Wander within the Orris Falls Conservation Area, a 171-acre (69-hectare) preserve with a waterfall, gorge, old graveyard, balancing boulder and several trails. From Lachance Point, glimpse Mount Agamenticus. Notice the original stone foundations of Orris and Mercy Littlefield’s home and barn. Walk the 1.4-mile (2.3-kilometer) roundtrip hike to Orris Falls or the 3-mile (5-kilometer) return trip to Balancing Rock.
Other pleasant walks in the area include the Bridle Path, the Bridle Path Loop, the River Run and Warren Way in the waterfront setting at Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park, a 250-acre (100-hectare) preserve along the Salmon Falls River. Nearby, find the Raymond & Simone Savage Wildlife Preserve, with a lookout over the Salmon Falls River and walking trails through meadows and forest.
During the winter, cross-country ski at the Highland Farm Preserve on its well-marked trails. The pathways, part of the Mount Agamenticus to the Sea Conservation Initiative (MtA2C), are popular for summer hiking too. Follow trails through meadows and past centuries-old stone walls and historic family cemeteries. Look for a tall stone cairn, built in the 1840s, a secret hallmark of the preserve.
Visit the extensive trail network and year-round outdoor adventure activities of Mount Agamenticus. The open summit offers 360-degree views of the southern Maine seacoast. Hike a rocky route to the top and explore a bit or follow the interpretive trail to learn about the preserve’s geological features. Lead young kids on the StoryWalk along the Ring Trail, with 24 stations featuring pages straight from nature-themed children’s books. You can also drive the road to the summit parking area.
