I was wary at first but gave Sussex motel a go and was very impressed. The place has been renovated and you can tell they took a lot of care to decorate and update the rooms. You can also tell that they take a lot of care to keep those rooms in good condition, clean, and add thoughtful details like placemats, extra towels, a variety of soaps. There was a BIG refrigerator, a huge tv, a table & 4 chairs in our room. These are not things you get even at extremely expensive hotels. I think Sussex motel gets major points for the effort they’ve put in.

The exterior of the motel could use updating. The room we had was updated and appeared very nice. Our stay was very noisy, especially when someone arrived at 3am and stomped around in their room above ours. All of the bedding was extremely fragrant with laundry smells and my family is allergic, so we dealt with migraines. Ended up leaving after 1 night. I’d rather sleep in my car than in this motel.

We are sad to hear about your experience. There were no rooms above yours- we checked where you stayed. During your visit we had many foreigners that came for the famous Spartan Race, so perhaps guests next door arrived late. We do not have a record of your concern, otherwise we would have talked to the new guests. The bedding and linens are washed and ironed by the professional company from outside called "Dempsey" and we have never received any complaints about the fragrance of their linens from any other guests. Kindly asking to choose different accommodations next time.

The manager was nice but the owner was so rude. My family did not feel safe staying here and we brokeout in allergies due to the pets that had previously stayed in the room we booked. They should clean their lining properly and i want a full refund! We had to stay elsewhere.

No refund will be provided. You checked in and stayed in the room, used the bathroom. After some time you wanted to check out and asked for full refund due to pet allergies. You were offered another room. You refused to try it. You spoke to me, the owner, and I politely asked why did you choose a pet friendly motel while having a pet allergy. I explained that all our linens are washed and sterilized by a professional linen company. The room was remodeled and spotless clean, and we did offer another room for you to try. You refused. Unfortunately we do not clean bathrooms for free and due to the fact that you refused another room we cannot give you the refund. In your review you are now mentioning "My family did not feel safe staying here..." which is a new information and probably the real reason. However, we are very safe and extremly well managed motel. If you would have mentioned your concern about safety, we would have offered you a room in another motels that we owned nearby to choose from.Going forward please do not waste hotel's time and book a hotel that do not accept pets.

Incredibly easy, seamless stay at this motel! We went on a quick snowboarding trip, and immediately the staff (specifically Jackie) was incredibly kind communicative and welcoming. I felt as if all my needs were met and even through messages you can tell what a kind soul Jackie is! We will definitely be booking again next time we snowboard on mountain creek

Had a great stay at the Sussex Motel. Jackie did a great job of communicating and accommodating each of my needs—she was a real sweetheart. The room we stayed in was SUPER nice too! It had a real comfy and rustic vibe, and it was only 13 short minutes away from Mountain Creek. Will definitely be coming back!

I am sorry to hear about your discomfort in room 18. I wish you mentioned the issue with the fan during your stay so we could have addressed it right away. There is an alternative heating source we could have turned on for you (wall AC/heating unit) or offered another room. We are not mind-readers and if a guest has an issue then the guest has to speak up at that time to give us a chance to address the concern. It is always dissapointing when a simple issue that could have been addressed really easy, was never communicated to us, and then somehow a guest thinks its OK to write a bad review. Regardless of your choices, we hope next time you voice your concerns during your stay and would not experience discomfort in any hotel you stay. On our end, we adjusted the fan to work more smoothly. Have a wonderful day, Edward!

Since you were pre-paid, and check-in manager was not aware of it, you were charged again but as soon as we discover it you were refunded. We hope you enjoyed your stay otherwise.

As other reviews have said, do not pre-judge the motel by the outside of the building , the inside of the rooms is very nice and seems remodeled. We got exactly what we paid for - there a few diners/restaurants nearby, but the main point was to be close to Mountain Creek to start early in the morning there which is exactly what is what it was! Super easy check-in, and no issues at all.

The room was very nice. With all the amenities. The owner of the hotel stated that the outside needs some work which they are in the process of doing but the rooms themselves were fine.

I love to see older properties start to come back to life. Don’t be fooled by first sight of this little motel. The room we stayed in was clean and comfortable. Staff was super nice. I hope they continue improving this forgotten about motel and wish them the best.

This was an appalling experience, and I would like the full cost of my ‘stay’ refunded. The noise, which I reported to the proprietor at 2 am, was intolerable. It paused only briefly, then resumed from above with sounds that included banging, moaning, and shouting. This was an exasperating, sleepless night and a waste of money. Please return payment in full. Thank you.

The outside of the motel needs updating, as it looks like something out of an episode of breaking bad. However, the inside is quite charming. The front office was not as pleasant as the gentleman running it was unkempt and it smelled terrible. The room was cozy and pretty, although our towels had holes in them (large ones). For the price, you get what you get.

Dear Guest Gail,From 77 a night + tax you paid, we are paying commission to Expedia.com and getting only 63.50. Your room had 2 queen beds, no extra charge for up to 4 guests.About appearance outside- not renovated yet, correct. It is a perfect movie set location and sometimes we are getting paid for filming trying to save money for the future renovations since our room rates are so very low.The gentlemen you are referring to might had an older T-shirt but no, he doesn't smell, you are wrong. It is insulting to us to hear such statement. I am surprised to hear about towels, perhaps they wear off from using bleach all the time. We do replenish our stock of towels every quarter.Kindly asking to find another accommodation next time that is better fit your requirements.

Claude,After receiving your review we texted you the video demonstrating how to use the shower knob to turn the water on. It is very simple- if you cannot figure out how to turn water on, then just ask. Our beds and mattresses are 3 months old and room renovated 4 months ago. Please find other place to stay next time.

My shower didn't work and there was a layer of dust everywhere. My feet were covered in hair and dust. But it's an $80 a night motel. It is what it is. The beds were hard and loud. But it was warm, safe, and a place to sleep while on business.

It was a weekend work trip and a few colleagues had to bunk up for the night and it was very welcoming and comfortable. The room was very clean and the furniture was arranged nicely. I enjoyed my short stay and would come back again for an extended stay if circumstances permit.

Nicely remodeled
The outside of the hotel is deceptive because it looked dated. Walking into the room, I was pleased to see how nicely the room was remodeled and decorated. I would be happy to stay there again.

It is always puzzling to us when a guest (usually hiding behind the name "anonymous") has not raised any concerns during their stay, after their stay, never mentioned anything after we ask "Was everything ok?", but then give us a bad rating WITHOUT ANY COMMENTS. I have to admit, I was a bit worried when I pulled up to this place. Looks really sketchy from the outside. The manager was cleaning my room when I arrived and asked me just to wait an extra five minutes. Pleasantly surprised to see a very modern, newly renovated room that was about the cleanest hotel room I’ve ever been in. Retro large fridge and microwave, along with seating area and table. Well appointed, shampoos conditioners, and a blow dryer. Don’t judge a book by its cover!

Cecily, thank you so much for taking the time to rate and review our property! As the manager of the motel, I find it important to set the tempo and work with my house keepers. As a former active duty Marine, I have taken the discipline and skills I have learned in my miliary service and applied them to the way I run and clean the motel down to the way the beds are made. 99.9% of the time, it is I, Matthew, Manager of the property that makes beds. I simply wouldn't have it any other way for our customers!

Bob, I am sorry you feel you had to go out of your way to rate us so low but with no comment. How can I consider changing what went wrong if you leave that part blank? As a former US Marine, I run I tight ship that takes pride in serving my customers so it's frustrating when my team and my hard work and time is represented with no representation as to why.

Your typical country motel down at the heels. Room was Ok with two queen beds, one of which was very uncomfortable. Man at the reception was welcoming and helpful. The next morning the electric power went out at 5:50am and never came back on. We left at 9:00am, office was still closed and nobody answered the phone. Using the bathroom with our cell phones flashlights wasn’t very convenient…

Thank you for letting us know about what happened and I am very sorry to read about your experience. Our carpenter and the power company was aware of the outage as many customers across the community were affected with a powerful outage that surged systems in many different businesses across all of Sussex County damaging certain components. With that, I apologize you couldn't reach anyone at the time as they were busy trying to figure out what had happened. Its unfortunate that some customers preferences like firmer beds vs softer ones are at a miss. In the future, should you expect to replicate your home sleeping situation, that bringing something to complement what your used to, should be considered.Finally, I, Matthew, Manager of the property happened to have stepped away after a much needed short but sweet vacation, so I am sorry I was not able to rectify this myself. I will make sure my staff is aware of this so as to be more mindful to our customers, especially when I step away. I realize that your experience affects your overall view but "Typical country motel" and 58" inch Flat screen TVs with Direct TV and large fridges doesn't sound typical of a motel at all. In fact, our dedication to our customers has garnered us as being one of the best around. I just really needed to point that out.
