Utah Lake State Park is a hot spot for locals and tourists during summer. It’s the largest freshwater lake in Utah and one of the largest in the West. The lake’s recorded history dates back to 1776 when a party of Spanish pioneers stumbled upon it. People had started to call it Utah Lake by the early 19th century. It took almost another 100 years before the marina was built, giving recreational boats easy access to the water and drawing in more tourists. The area opened as a state park in 1970.The calm waters offer perfect conditions for sailing, water skiing and fishing. The nearby Provo River is a favorite spot for canoeing during the warmer months. Brave the cold and go ice fishing in winter to catch catfish and bass. Check in with staff at the visitor center in Provo for guidance on where to go exploring, hiking and camping. They’ll provide maps and advice on all things relating to camping and boating in the area. Tap their knowledge of the best walking trails and wildlife watching areas.Stay overnight at a campsite if you came in an RV or have a tent and supplies. The campground at Utah Lake has modern bathroom facilities and plenty of room. Reservations for campsites should be made in advance. Check the Utah State Park’s website for details.Utah Lake State Park is located at the mouth of the Provo River, about 48 miles (77 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City. Nearby Provo, the third largest city in Utah, is studded with eateries, churches and quaint shops. Stop for lunch or pick up supplies for a picnic near the lake.The Utah Lake State Park is 4,500 feet (1,370 meters) above sea level. In summer, you can come here for a day trip and stop by the Timpanogos Cave National Monument to the north.
