Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with other travelers. We are in the oldest part of the city of Utica, a rust belt city. We do have people in our neighborhood who are poor or displaced and they come from many of the 43 different people groups that have come to call Utica home. Although not perfect, we have done many things to update and improve our 160 year old building. In a few days, the outside of the building will (finally!) be repaired and repainted. Simply finding a painter who is willing to do the job has taken over 3 months time. We appreciate your supporting our small, family-owned business. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. We did investigate the issue. Two separate reservations were made on different dates. One was canceled. There was an error in the interface between our system and it seemed like everything was canceled. That's how you lost your reservation. Communication through these 3rd parties is always more complicated than contacting us. Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience this glitch in the system caused you and your family. Dear Robert,We are located in the oldest part of the city of Utica. It is our desire to contribute to the community in a positive way and guests who choose to stay with us are helping us to do that.We have been making serious efforts since 2019 to update the Inn and make it more appealing to more travelers looking for a unique option in lodging.The odor in the room you were in was caused by heavy cologne from a previous guest. We only use unscented cleaning products.Our fire system was inspected 3 months ago and was working properly at that time.Although it is not our policy to refund last minute cancellations, I made an exception in your case. I sent you a message telling you that after I had looked at the room, I decided to refund you. I will say again, we did not cause the odor in the room and even after a second thorough cleaning which included carpet shampooing, washing curtains and all upholstery, the scent of the cologne still persisted. We had to run our ozone/UV disinfecting lamps for 2 hours to finally clear the scent.We are sorry that you had a negative experience. We try to make it clear in our property description that we are located in an inner-city area with many different types of people living in our historic neighborhood. We certainly are not for everyone and don't try to be. Please check your bank statement and you will see that your room cost was refunded and only the 25 cancellation fee was retained.
