Nyhavn showing a marina, night scenes and a city

Copenhagen Travel Guide Video

Making a visit to the capital of Denmark is like stepping into a fairy tale, as this picturesque Scandinavian city by the sea embodies Old World charm.

Copenhagen mixes a fascinating heritage with stylish modern designs. Explore the charming city with its beautiful harbors, cycling culture and great public transportation system to find out why Copenhagen is praised for its quality of life.

Copenhagen has an international airport and is also connected to all major European cities by bus, train and boat. Denmark is part of the EU, but the Danish kroner is still its currency. English is widely spoken in this multicultural capital of 600,000 people. To save money, purchase the cOPENhagen CARD and get free entry or attractive discounts on most of the major attractions, transportation, gear rental and restaurant meals.

Discover Copenhagen’s origins as a 12th-century fishing town in the City Museum and then try fresh seafood in the Nyhavn (New Harbor). The National Museum of Denmark shows how Vikings once ruled the surrounding waters. The Danish capital is on the strait between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Its northern location brings long winters, but visitors appreciate seeing the magic of the historic city draped in snow.

In summer, Copenhagen’s parks and waterfront precincts come alive and Tivoli Gardens opens its doors. This central location is one of the oldest theme parks in the world. Kids will also love the Copenhagen Zoo. To see where Denmark’s royals reside, head to Amalienborg Palace. From there, walk or cycle along the waterfront to find the sculpture of The Little Mermaid, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale.

The Round Tower also seems to emerge straight from the children’s books of this popular Danish author and the tall structure has some dark tales of its own. Another magnificent lookout point is the corkscrew-shaped spire of the 17th-century Church of Our Saviour. From its windows it is easy to see why so many people fall in love with Copenhagen.

Getting around Copenhagen

Copenhagen’s public transportation system is widely regarded as one of the most impressive anywhere on the planet, so there is no need to rent a car here. The metro network runs 24 hours a day and the trains arrive every few minutes. Overground transportation includes the S-trains and a range of bus routes. Buy a City Pass for unlimited access to all public transportation for a chosen number of days. Visit the Public Transport Authority website.Browse Copenhagen rental cars.

Best time to visit

If you want sunshine and warm days in Copenhagen, visit in late spring or summer. Temperatures begin to dip in September, and don’t pick up again until May. The summer months are punctuated by a wide range of open-air cultural events. Visit in winter and the atmosphere will be less lively, but you may get the chance to see Copenhagen covered in snow. Be prepared for plenty of rain too, though.

Go to Roskilde on the train and see the Viking ships, sail on one in summer. Also go to the old cathedral there and see the elaborate burials of the Kings and Queens. Eat at Bofhaus or Nyhavn.

2/5 - Disappointing

Verified traveler

it was a rough trip, with my return flight home being cancelled then rescheduled without any notice whatsoever, and with the hotel messing up my room reservation. besides that, the city itself is fantastic. it was my 3rd time visiting Copenhagen.

I just want to add that we were there at a difficult time, as the Coronavirus was getting going. Despite that unexpected stress, which resulted in our leaving early, everyone was polite and helpful.
